  1. 1. Do i persevere with the front plate or bite the bullet and order a smaller rectangle?

    • Bodge the square one onto the grille somehow

    • Buy yet another new plate (rectangular)

Im sure your all sick of hearing about my calamitous attempt to buy and fit new number plates, but i thought i would post this anyway as now i am really knackered

So i had the car widemouthed on Saturday, ordered new plates monday. Yesterday they arrived and i thought they looked pretty good.

So today i set about removing the old ones and fitting the new ones. Pulls off the front and rear plate no problem.

Spent 30-45 minutes removing the sticky pads that had been holding my illegal front plate and then the Square plate overlapped either the light or fog light :'(

So i thought never mind i'll just stick it onto the grille and have a square plate in the centre.

Oh no the plate wont stick to the mesh :'(

So now the car is sat on the front with no front plate i can't drive it until i do something with it.

What do i do? Do i order another rectangular plate? Smaller than the original but still legal, Or is there some way of fixing the square plate to the mesh?

Any suggestions/recommendations on what to do? Ideally i would love to fit the square plate to the mesh as that would save me the £20 for another rectangular plate.

Please help

Nathan

Try drilling the plate carefully and cable tying it to the mesh?

Depends on thickness of ties and the holes though I guess. String maybe?

I was thinking cable ties as well but cant decide whether it would look a bag of w*nk with loose ends everwhere. Also whether it would rattle against the mesh in the wind :|

If you could remove the bumper, you could put the block-y bit of the tie at the back, and cut it flush? Rattling I dunno, maybe stick some foam pads on the back of the plate?

I've not read the other thread, but is there much point in doing the mesh conversion to cover it up again? Couldn't you get a motorbike plate made up? Or is that all in the other thread?

Quite a few dubla entendre's popping into this thread.

I had to read it back a couple of times to find them too!:D

Statements with double meanings or that could be interpretted as such.

Hot glue and wire

the mesh conversion would have to be done to fit a square plate anyway i guess as you have the rectangular holder on there to start with, plus i haven't seen any other fabs with a square center plate thought id be original however why there are no others is beginning to be more clear :giggle:

Hot glue and wire

Please go on...

>> Holes on backing plate,

>> Pan head screws through holes onto some wood behind the mesh and plate,

>> Attach the backing plate to the number plate (with hot glue or something similar), job done.

Could use Mastic. Body shops use it to bond exterior parts to the car. Side skirts etc.

It's ultra strong stuff, but when it's on it's on for life.

You can get it from local car paint suppliers.

might have to have a look at that mastic stuff mate and it will stick even to grill mesh?

Drill 2 small holes in the top corners of the plate and use 2 small bolts that fit through the mesh, then use 2 nuts on the back.Finish off with using 2 white head covers like the old screws had.

I like this idea

Lay some wire down and blob hot glue to make it bond then you can thread the wire through the mesh and twist to secure. Repeat several times. No holes = no damaged plate or water ingress which will make the plate go black

Also a very good idea, only problem is ive gotta walk down to the shop to get all this ****, not being able to drive sucks

Exactly how big is the square number plate ? I'm guessing quite big I'm guessing quite big if it's covering most of the fog light or the head light ?

Sticking the plate onto the mesh for the bigmouth will look pretty crap IMO

Try and get some pics up

Stick your plate in the window and drive

Oh yes. This stuff sticks to anything.

Here it is on ebay

You'll have to hold the plate in place with masking tape till it dries but after thet it in't coming off.

No need for holes, wire's etc, just a clean no. plate stuck on.

How about drilling a couple of 5mm holes in the plate, Use 5mm pan head stainless Allen machine screws (Linky) passed through the plate and mesh, Secure using 5mm washers and Nyloc nuts.

Some of the plate mounting tape stuck to the back of the plate (leave on the backing plastic) will stop it rattling!

Am I missing something here? Was the wide mouth done for a FMIC, or just for street cred looks? If you fit a square plate over the lower grill, it's going to kill a lot of the airflow.

Just for looks at the moment pal, but a FMIC will be on the cards at some point... Just ain't got £600+ to throw at her quite yet :giggle:
