VCDS Tdi Timing Checker correct engine choice for Octavia

Featured Replies

I just purchased VCDS and when following the procedure for checking timing I can only find one reference for an ASV engine in the pull down menu in Tdi Timing Checker. It says 1.9l R4 Tdi AGR/AHF/ALH/ASV Golf/Jetta post 03/1999. Is this the one I should choose for my car (2002 1.9 tdi 110bhp ASV engine)? If so it looks like my timing is very retarded ie not even above the red line on the graph.

Yes that is the one to use and so it would appear that the timing on your engine is retarded slightly. Don't despair though, it's easy to adjust it. Remove the top part of the timing cover by unclipping it and loosen the three screws on the pump pulley with a 13mm socket. Using a spanner move the pump pulley against direction of rotation to advance the timing. Make only very tiny adjustments at a time and re-check the timing with VCDS. Don't waste your time trying to chase the blue centre line. It's better to set the timing slightly advanced of centre, so halfway between the blue and green line is best.

I've just purchased one of the cheap VAG-COM USB cables of eBay and downloaded VCDS Lite. When you download it says it contains the TDi Timing Check and someting else. I'd like to check my timing too.

Does anyone know if you need to register & pay for these to work?

If I did register etc, is everything going to work anyway with one of these cheap cables?

Tom

The TDI Timing checker does not work in Shareware Mode since Basic Settings is not available.

If you register your copy, you will have all the functionality that the non-CAN interface provides.

Brilliant thanks! So its Ok to put a spanner on the yellow painted nut and turn the pump? Its not going to undo or anything?

Incidentally I have quite a few parts on the car which have blobs of yellow paint. Presumably these parts were replaced at some time?

Yes turn the centre nut as the 3 holding nuts(you have slackend off just enough to move pump) are in slots allowing the pump to move to advance or retard timming.Just a slight tap with your hand can send timming off the graph so takes some messing.I changed my cambelt and set timming just below centre line and I can tell the car is not as fast and fuel consumption up.Re setting today need it above centre line on vcds graph but below top line,
