1.9 SLX TDI poor MPG

Featured Replies

Hi everyone!

I just got a 1999 octavia. That is a 1.9 liter SLX TDI model (110bhp), which have just done 95000 miles.

According to both the user's manual and owner's review, the fuel consumption of this car should be like that:

extra urban: more than 60MPG

town: more than 45MPG

combine: 53MPG

But in my car, when I was driving on M1 at 70MPH, the dash board displayed only 48-50MPG. On the trip from Sheffield to London (about 160 miles), nearly all motorway trips, the car just got 54 MPG by very carefully driving (never beyond 70MPH, only overtake trucks). When I was driving at a speed of 70MPH, the engine speed was over 2000rpm on the 5th gear.

In town, it only returns about 30 MPG.

I think this fuel consumption is too poor to a 1.9TDI engine car, although it is a 11 years old one because the mileage is really low.

I just made a big serviced for the car a week ago, replaced all the filters and changed the oil. The dealer told me that everything is fine about this car except one glow plug.

So just want to receive some advices from anybody who has owned this type of car for a long time, how much MPG do you get on motorway and town?

I also checked early topics about this issue, is it relevant to temperature sensor?

Thanks a lot!

CTS might affect it, along with maybe a semi-bunged up inlet manifold/EGR/Anti-shudder assembly.

I assume you performed the service? New air filter was fitted I guess.

If you can find someone local to you then checking if the MAF is working might help. Does the car still feel perky to drive, or is it a bit like an old dog? If the former then maybe the MAF might just be starting to fail, if the latter then you can unplug the MAF drive the car and if it is more lively then you located at least one of your problems.

I don't do much motorway work as a general rule, but I do 120 miles of twisting A/B roads on my commute to work and I can get get just over 60mpg while still driving at a brisk but legal pace and a few overtakes thrown in for a good measure, plus a short length of dual carriageway. I am sure I could get it even higher if I tried (like not booting it up hills, etc).

Thank you for the advices!

I serviced the car a week ago, all the filters were replaced including the air filter.

Silly question: what are CTS and MAF?

About the driving condition of the car, I have to say that I'm really lack of diesel experiences, this is my first diesel, so I have no idea that if the power output is normal or not. Actually, the engine never shuts down on the first gear even if I release the clutch quickly. Overall, I think the car drives good, only poor on MPG.

As your 110 TDI got more than 60MPG on motorway, I think there is something wrong with mine. So I gonna find a local garage and have my car a check as your advice.

Those figures sound about right to me, my 110 never got the figure quoted in the book

30 is a bit low for around town, but that depends on how you drive it!?

The motorway i was getting 54 , give or take but never 60! and combined with comuting to work everyday and using the car for long outings on the weekend i was getting 45-48 ish

I doubt the MAF is gone as the car would be so slow youd have lorries passing you and youd know that there was something wrong.

One thing ive found with diesels is not to try and drive then too slow and change up too early as the car uses too much fuel trying to maintain the speed, dont over labour the engine, even though a dissel will do it quite happyly.

When i drive on back roads with my 130 i use 5th as this slightly higher rev range is better on fuel than if i was using less revs in 6th.

Just try not to over labour it and see how you get on

:+1: Definitely trying to use torque of the engine rather than changing a gear won't help.

Been getting over 60 mpg now the weather is better. Filled up, drove to Welsh West coast, covered 250 miles and tank range still shows 475 miles. Computer shows 62 mpg and the driving was spirited much of the time but lots of coasting down the long hills. Engine is a 130 hp 1.9D which 101K on it and performance is still great. Up Holden hill, the huge one after Exeter on way to Plymouth, and it is still capable of being way over legal limit at the top, as the 60 plate Astra diesel found out.

Change up gear so revs do not drop below 1600 rpm, gearing is high on the 130 ie about 36 mph per 1000 rpm. I have had the 140 hp diesel in the mark V Golf chasis and 130 hp in the 1.9D is quicker and fuel economy about 5-7 mpg better.

Gone over to TSIs now as fuel consumption in in the 40s if not in race mode but when you do zing them then they are fun.

Our diesel had an episode which I think was its Mass Air thingy which felt like turbo switching off but seem to rectify itself and now it is back to full song. Only problem is what to replace it with which will probably be a 1.6CR in Fabia, Monte Carlo if deals are still on in Q2 or if they start doing deals on Yetis but as we do about 100K miles a year what ever we have we cannot hold on to for long as miles get too high very fast.

Gearing on the 110 is about 30mph/1000rpm, so 70mph actual should be about 2333rpm.

Your town driving figure will depend a lot on how much time you spend stopped. For once in a way the "combined" figure is typical of my consumption on single carriageway (except my commute, with 2 warm-ups, several unpredictable stops, and a steep climb at one end), but I like to "make progress", and often cruise at 60[cough]mph.

Hi,

I have a T-Reg Skoda Octavia SLX Tdi (110hp) which I am just about to sell on EBay. I have done 110000 miles in it (now stands at 165 000 miles and my average fuel consumption is 52mpg. Whn I am on the motorway, keeping to 70, I can easily get 60 mpg. When I commuted for a year or so over a 45 mile journey, I could get up to 70 mpg. During that year (over 15000 miles) my average MPG went up to 59mpg. I would therefore say that you are definitely not getting what you can out of the car.

I have it serviced every year; apart from that I've done nothing special to the car.

Very similar to the OP - I'm running an SLX TDI in Sheffield with 95k on it. Mines a 2000 though.

My brim to brim mpg has ranged from 38 mpg (mainly town driving) to 60mpg (trip to Cornwall - mainly motorways). Over 2500 ish miles since I got it I'm averaging about 46 mpg calculated or 48 mpg on the computer. On the daily commute to Chesterfield I get 49 to 54 mpg on the way there and 40 - 46 on the way back. 30mpg would be really poor - I only get that on really short trips involving hills and speedbumps.

Running the climate control seems to reduce efficiency but not by a huge amount.
