Can I drive 5 miles with a misfire

Featured Replies

One of my coil packs has died (verified by moving it to a different cylinder and watching the misfire follow it). Can I drive it gently 5 miles to my nearest dealer to get a new one without damaging the cat? As I understand it, the cat is damaged because the unburnt fuel entering it causes it to overheat.

Actually, come to think of it, there may be an even better solution: My car runs on LPG and the injectors are easily accessible. Why not just unplug the injector of the cylinder with the failed coil pack? That way, there'd be no unburnt fuel to enter the cat. (I know the LPG controller doesn't mind this as the installer tested the injectors by unplugging them one by one while the engine was running.)

Even if I cut off the fuel supply to that cylinder by disconnecting the injector in question?

NO don't drive it...MM £40 for coil or £1500 plus for engine?? and a tenner for taxi.

NO don't drive it

Well that told me. I was just seeking to understand why (and still don't).

i told ya in first post y ,you will cause damage it really isn't worth wrecking it...If you get bore wash it will totally ruin the piston and could get alot of fuel in your oil..Only trying to help that is all..For 5 miles surly you must have someone who could give you a lift?

Only trying to help that is all[...] you will cause damage [...] If you get bore wash it will totally ruin the piston and could get alot of fuel in your oil
Yeah, okay, I appreciate that. My question, then - for the purposes of expanding my understanding - is how I could get bore wash (or cat damage) if no fuel is injected into the misfiring cylinder.

Because the car will over fuel to compinsate for the missing cylinder...Also it will still dump fuel in the cylinder that is misfiring and since the coil has packed in there is no way to burn the fuel off therefore you get BOREWASH...and if it is bad you oil will look like ****..and you will smell fuel.

Ahhhhh, I see. Thank you for explaining. So the air that's still passing through the fuelless cylinder will mix with the other exhaust gases and make the lambda probe think the engine's running lean, causing the ECU to enrich the mixture. Is that right?

5 miles? Go for a walk!

It's time that's the problem, otherwise I'd be on my bike (no pun intended). I have to be at work tomorrow morning.

Anyway, no matter as a friend has kindly agreed to run me to and from the garage first thing in the morning.

I was going to say, consider a set as its likely another will be soon after.

Awesome do a full set for 80 quid.
