Bluetooth from scratch

Featured Replies

Ok guys wanting to install Bluetooth in my DSG vRS (my2010)

am I right in thinking I need the following:

5N0035730D Kit

3C0 919 935 A = Floor Bracket

1K0 971 813 C 9B9 = Cover (black)

1K0 919 747 = Bracket

1Z0 919 694 = Bracket for Interface Box

N 909 099 01 = Oval Socket head bolt with hex drive M6x18

N 909 460 01 = Expanding Nut

N 015 082 10 = Hexagon Nut

N 906 674 02 = Hexagon Bolt M6x10

Am I correct in thinking that the new 5N0035730D has a built in Bluetooth aerial?

I'm also guessing that as I don't currently have bluetooth installed I'll need someone with vcds to code it in for me.

Does the eBay kit look like it contains all the wiring needed?

Are parts 2 and 4 needed?

I might have a few of those parts available. Will check for you.

And yes, you need those brackets.

I've just ordered the 5N0 kit from e-bay (Car Systems in Poland for £229). Its currently in Hannover and heading for home courtesy of UPS. Will let you know what it really does contain when it arrives. I've spoken with my local independent VW servicer and they can carry out the recode. The kit from Car Systems has the recode details and fitting instructions and the box can go behind the radio or under the seat apparently (not sure which seat though!). Car Systems have been very helpful so far and quick to answer queries. I'm also not sure where the GSM antennae goes too, but hope that somebody out there knows! Fitting could be this weekend depending on weather and the like - wish me luck!!!!!!!

That GSM Antennae look like the type I've had before with Nokia hf kits. These were self adhesive, and you stick them up at the top if the windscreen. Typically you can get the far enough under the headlineing so you can't see them. (EDIT: you were NOT supposed to place them over the metalic type sun strips as it reduced reception)

Also, I'm looking to do this. Can you post a link to the unit you've bought - the link at the top here, whislt the title talks about a 5N0035730D, the text notes 3C8035730A. Previously I've been lead to beleive they're the same, but Mike's post here http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/192497-hands-freebluetooth-for-my-vrs/page__view__findpost__p__2298075 makes me wonder otherwise.

What phone are you using?

Any info as to how you get on would be great. This topic comes up so often we could really do with a definitive "you have this car, this radio/display, this phone therfore you need this kit" type thread

Can't give you a link to the item I've bought from e-bay because my brain is too small to work out how to do it!!!! If you search for 5N0035730D in e-bay you should get about 4 choices currently. I've bought the kit from Car Systems in Poland as it contains the microphone, black box, wiring and GSM antennae. Some of the e-bay listings are just for the black box, so you need to be aware of what you're looking at. My car was first reg'd Jan 2010 and it doesn't have the microphone, wiring, etc, pre-fitted - hence my purchase choice. I do know that I'll need to get the coding changed so that the phone kit will talk to the rest of the car; this should be under £40 from my local independent VW service chappy apparently. I'm really still none the wiser where the 'official' place for the GSM antennae is - so if anyone really does know................

I did a few weeks of looking before buying and the chaps at Car Systems were helpful and can advise on kit required depending on car, equipment, year, display, etc - just hope they know what they're talking about!!!!!!! I also looked at getting my local Skoda dealer to fit the factory fit kit, but the lad on the phone seemed to talk themselves out of the job saying that it was 'really expensive'. A Parrot fitted is about the cost of buying the VW kit from Car Systems, but I didn't want a box fitted to my dash and wanted the full functionality of the factory kit.

Just waiting for it to arrive now, but the forecast for the weekend looks a bit iffy here in the sunny south, so fitting could be delayed a while!! I guess it would have been much easier to have ordered the phone kit when I ordered the car back in Sep 09!!!!

It'll be this one: http://tinyurl.com/4le53gd

Thanks,

That's the one i'd looked at (and got confused about the fact it uses 5N0035730D in the title but 3C8035730A in the text)

Well i confess i don't :( But i think it has to be on the glass somewhere, else your shielding the antennae. I suspect if you'd ordered a factory fit, you'd have a different aerial on the roof that incorperates the GSM. I can't find reference too it, but i have vague recollections of having seen something about a combined GPS/GSM/FM one.

Yes, fingers crossed.

Yes, but the option is ~ £500 (admittedly with the multifunction wheel)

Just to add I've bought and install this kit 9W7, but I think you can also use the 9WZ. There seem to be lots of different bluetooth units but I think these are the two newest ones that do Bluetooth 2.0 and RSAP.

Chris.

I do have some fitting bits for placing this under the driver's seat, in the OEM position.

If you're interested, let me know and I'll get you some more info and photos.

The kit arrived today - all genuine VW bits. The GSM aerial has a self adhesive strip, so me thinks windscreen mounting (out of swept area of screen, field of view, etc, for MOT) is the way forward. Haven't decided yet if black box to go under seat or behind radio - amount of free time, weather, enthusiasm, etc, will determine its resting place!!!!!

Will update when fitted and coded.

Keep us informed pal, you can be our test subject.:giggle:

+1

And good luck PhilG66.

Regarding the GSM aerial, like i say, you'll probably find that you can fit it up between the head lining and screen. I've had a number of car kits that have screen mounted aerial and i've not been able to see one without looking very closely (in fact, the first time i realised i had on was when a windscreen fitter left if dangling down when he took a cracked windsreen out)

Any info would be great - by the sound of things, there's a few of us waiting for results from the guinea pig (you)

EDIT: re-getting stuff in, if you've not already seen it, this may help with trim removal etc: http://octavia-vrs.com/cms/content/integrated-bluetooth

OK, so the kit is in! Probably not for the faint-hearted, or for people with pork sausage (very big) fingers! Easy bits: fitting microphone, fitting GSM aerial (above RV mirror at top of screen), wiring for mic and GSM aerial. Not so easy bits: loads of trim removal (glovebox out, door sill trims, panel under steering wheel), (Bolero) radio and AC control unit out. Difficult bits: adding piggy back wiring harness (feed in from glovebox space), reconnecting Bolero (wires are quite short and pork sausage fingers will be a disadvantage here!), routing black box wiring under carpet to get under driver's seat (bit of a strength test!). The bits that caught me out were: the piggy back wiring harness - there isn't room to leave the connector in behind Bolero, hence glovebox out and feed in from that way; the instructions said put the black box in the dash behind behind the AC control panel - one look said that this wasn't going to fit, so as the glovebox was out try behind there. No room there either, so pull the Bolero out again, route black box cables behind steering wheel, along sill, under carpet and eventually under the driver's seat. Black box is now under the seat, but needs fixing down, so will need the bits to do this.

Apart from that, all the bits fitted together, the wiring harness was long enough and the Bolero recognises that its got some new functionality, but won't let me set up my phone - so recode is definitely required on my car (vRS, first reg Jan 10).

I also notice that there's a post on Briskoda (from Mike Holroyd?) regarding bluetooth units from Poland coming from cars like a Sharan and being sold as for Skoda (i.e. mine!). Causes a bit of recode complication, but not insurmountable apparently - will keep you all posted on how this goes!

Total time to fit (work out where to put bits, try again, take off trims, etc, again) over two evenings - about 4 hours with a few cut fingers and scraped knuckles. Now that I've done the hard work for you, you could probably do it in 2 hours quite easily!! Don't forget to be careful with all the delicate plastic trims around the radio too, otherwise your costs may go skywards!

OK, so black box coded this afternoon and appears to work well. I have a smile on my face!!! Was a little bit of a learning curve as instructions from supplier weren't for black box model supplied - but on request they quickly supplied correct coding. Phone (Nokia 6300) paired with car no probs and signal strength is good as GSM aerial is at top of windscreen. ABTECH in Southampton did coding - very nice chaps!!!

Overall - very pleased. No visible wires, or boxes sat on dashboard (Parrot) and reasonable price - £229 + £45 for coding (2 visits as original coding wrong for box supplied).

Go for it!!!!!!!!

Were there any functions that were not available through the Bolero HU? Very interested in this although the installation does sound a bit daunting.

Glad it worked out ok in the end.

So are you saying that the unit is useless without coding? I was under the impression that the stuff with the bolero worked before coding and you only needed the coding for the maxidot? (Not that it matters, just means i may have to find someone to code sooner rather than later.

Steve

I've looked at these units on eBay too and I'm tempted to buy, self install and then get a local VAG independent to code it up.

With not knowing anything about the coding side of things, I'm a little unsure as to what I'd need to provide to the garage. Will I get a sheet of codes which need enabling on the car? I assume the garage would know exactly what to do with them? Perhaps Phil or Mike could post the info required for coding the 7NO?

Glad you got it installed anyway Phil, thanks for the interesting thread!

Thanks Mike. So there is no code to enable as such, the garage will be able to see the new module in the VCDS software and they'll then need to enable the various options for the module?

Okay cheers Mike. Sounds like the VAG specialist shouldn't have any problems doing it.

One more question, you mention that this particular module shouldn't be used in pre-FL cars. What about an LE which has the FL interior and Bolero? I imagine it'll be fine but wanted to check!

Cheers

Dan

Hi Mike,

As I understand it, the LE has the latest interior from the facelift cars. Any easy well to tell if the dash pod is the facelift one?

Cheers

Comparing non LE pre facelift cars to facelift ones on Autotrader, the LE has the new dash pod. So I should be safe!

I had a look on YouTube for VCDS videos, there's a good one with an overview of how it works on there. looks and sounds like the recoding will be simple.

Cheers for the help

Glad you guys have found this interesting and glad that Mike Holroyd has added his experience to the thread - all good stuff!

Mike is right, the kit is not too bad to fit after all is said and done. Leave yourself plenty of time to do it, don't get flustered and you should be fine! Wiring is all plug in, no cutting, making dodgy connections, etc, so its hard to go wrong. Worst thing that happened to me is that I cut the end of my left hand index finger - its meant that I've struggled to play my guitar this week as its been a bit sore!!!!!!!!!

So take the plunge and buy a kit. You get the functionality and compatibility from genuine VW bits and don't get anything visible to say its there.

Decided to buy the kit from the polish guy on the bay of e!

Mike or any other 'coding experts', what changes will I need to make to the CAN gateway? This is vag-com readout

Address 19: CAN Gateway Labels: None

Part No SW: 7N0 907 530 HW: 1K0 907 951

Component: J533 Gateway H27 5603

Revision: H27 Serial number: blahblah

Coding: E9A07F0600020200002303

Shop #: WSC 73430 790 00000

Also thinking I'll just cable tie the module up near fuse box - will it fit ok? And can I just gently tug the Bolero trim off, starting from the bottom?

TIA!

Thanks very much Mike!

I've got Maxidot - do I need to do anything to code that in?

Actually I might just shove the bluetooth unit 'under the carpet' and hope it doesn't get too hot!?
