Scout Wheel Repair

Featured Replies

Have had what looks like a stone take the top surface off one of my scout wheels hence there's now some underlying corrosion starting to appear. Has anyone got a tip for repairing this or done a repair in the past ? i'm quite keen to prevent it from getting worse as scout wheels seem to be quite fragile as it is ?

Check to be sure its a stone, there are quite a few owners having problems with the Lacquer lifting on the Scouts & a few threads on here about it

Have already had three of the wheels replaced and have just found it outside of the warranty period. Not sure they'll go for replacing it now although it is worth a go I suppose. Anyone know how much an alloy is just out of interest ? Maybe they'll go 50/50.......

Doubt they will

As well as looking at the cost of a new wheel also look at the cost or refurbing all 4 to a better finish. New wheels may well be pricey & compare well with refurbing all 4. Odds are the way these wheels are failing the good ones may go eventually.

I would guess a new wheel is going to be 200 - 250 but I could be wrong, just basing that on the cost of a wheel from another manufacturer

Ordered a spare alloy with my Scout it was about £170 iirc

get it sorted fairly promptly otherwise it'll end up looking like this: (good job my car's usually plasetered in mud...)

It's where the polished finish (flat face of the spokes and rims) meets the normal unpolished painted surface where the corrosion starts.

I too have a stone chip on the face of a spoke and the leading edge of another spoke, both of which have now started to delaminate / corrode.

Skoda hasn’t improved the quality of the wheel so replacing them isn't a long term fix. I'm now on my fourth under warranty.

There is another current thread where a fellow member is also looking to have their proteus alloys refurbished…

A suggestion was to have them totally painted or plastic coated including the polished surface to try and make them last as long as possible.

Not sure I would be happy loosing the polished spokes as they do look good when clean, but clearly at a cost!

Thanks for all the replies, I had my first 3 replaced based on the info from here. Shame the 4th didn't go until after the warranty ran out. Has anyone considered aftermarket wheels ? Seems there's some quite nice ones at WheelBase who are advertising on here....

Take care with aftermarket wheels & research well, some of the "cheaper" ones are made from lower quality alloy. I bought some Woolfrace wheels a few years ago & managed to buckle 3 in 12 months, nothing obvious from the outside but when viewed from the inside the unsuported inner edge had gone out of shape. If your scout has a rugged life this could be even more crucial
