concerned newbie

Featured Replies

Hi all, like many others on this forum I am avidly awaiting my lovely new Octi.L&K so have been trawling through the threads. One thing has started to worry me and that is this wheel alignment issue. Iget the impression that the dealers can`t be trusted to ensure that the alignment is correct prior to delivery would that be correct? How big an issue is this? if i take to a tyre outlet to get it done will that have warranty issues? Any advice would be helpful Thanks!

If you have a concern, print off the relevant threads on this forum and take them to the dealer and express your concerns. Get their views. Talk to the service manager as well as the sales manager and ask how they would deal with the problem should it arise. At least then you'll know their attitude and can act accordingly.

I think the consensus is that the car is not properly aligned when leaving the factory and the dealer doesn't have the kit, probably doesn't have the know-how and very possibly has no interest in a proper alignment.

You as the owner however face all the costs of worn tyres, poor economy etc so it would probably be worth your while getting it checked. I don't think it is a must but probably well advised.

PS Make sure you get the alignment done at the tyre pressure you intend to use !

if i take to a tyre outlet to get it done will that have warranty issues?

Also, I wouldn't recommend taking it to a "tyre outlet". I would suggest taking it to someone who has the equipment and knowledge to do a full 4 wheel alignment. I'm sure you will get suitable suggestions from somebody in your area via this forum.

From trawling all the information off this Site an this subject, I have come to the conclusion that this issue only affects those cars with sports suspension, but I may be wrong. My first Octavia was an Elegance 1.9 diesel, but fitted with sports suspension and apart from the bloody awful ride it suffered from alignment problems, but my present car is an L and K with standard suspension and no problems and that's why I'm picking up a new L & K this week.

Thanks Mac thats reassuring how long did you have to wait for your L&K?

Its a new car & the dealer will not be expected to check it, it should be right but its obvious from the threads that on many cars its not.

I would just make sure the dealer is aware that you know about the problem & say if you experience uneven tyre wear you will be expecting the dealer to replace the tyres FOC. Then its down to him to decide what to do. By the time it gets to its first service any uneven wear will be showing, adjustment will be needed & new tyres required.

It only appears to be on some cars so theres no guarantee it will effect yours.

Its a new car so you should not be expected to pay out for it to be checked by a tyre specialist as some have suggested & if they adjust it you have no come back with the dealer if anything else subsequently wears unevenly. I also find some tyre fitting companies havent a clue on setting alignment. I once trusted a car with Kwik Fit many years ago & they got the angle of toe spot on but set it out instead of in making the car somewhat interesting to drive as it followed every change in road camber, surface etc & it went from interesting to "exciting" under heavy braking

Yep, the age old saying, if its not in writing it hasnt been said springs to mind. A less confrontational way might be a polite e-mail & ask that they acknowledge receipt. If they say they are going to check it ask for the print out to give peace of mind (proof) its been done.

Dont let this little niggling thought worry you, The Octy is a cracking car & Im sure you will love it. Many new cars have little problems but Ive found on the 4 Skodas we have had they are minor & our dealer at least is excelent at sorting things.

I've only heard of this problem on a VRs. I've got the optional sport suspension and 17" rims. No unusual wear and still on OE rear tyres at ~28,000 miles.

Thanks guys I am feeling better already,I am really looking forward to receiving it but it was quite a shock to find this issue after all the fantastic reveiws of the car. as you say most cars have some issue or other but forewarned is forearmed as my old Mum used to say. All i need now is a definate build date.

bye for now.
