Fire extinguisher location

Featured Replies

Just a note to say the £6.99 lidl fire extinguishers fit like they were made to measure in the bottle holders in the door pockets of the Octy. They just look like total lemons in either side's pocket though :giggle::thumbdown:

They fit perfectly in the offside storage bin of the estate, where that wee harness / strap for a vertical bottle of some kind is in the first aid storage bin. Just needs a wee clip to fill the gap the straps can't quite reach. I've made a quick release clip out of wire i bent up, but a half unfolded paper clip would do.

Wont help you if you get rear ended sitting in there, but out of sight and might be useful sometime. Can be moved to the drivers bottle holder area in seconds when going abroad.

Pay a little more for the Skoda one and fit it here...

Pay a little more

That goes against my religion... I'm Scottish remember :giggle:

Take care with cheap fire extinguishers & do what research you can. I bought a Halfords special a few years ago. A couple of years later whilst I had everything emptied out of the boot I moved the car & clipped the extinguisher leaving the metal case graunched so decided to get a new one. To dispose of the old one it went in the bin, probably not the right thing to do but I had to empty it before putting it in the bin, I got a reosnable cloud of dust but it took about 3 seconds to empty, hardly enough time to get it ptoperly aimed in an emergency. Needless to say its replacement cost significantly more. I feel that then many of the "cheapies" were made just to satisfy the need to have one abroad. Maybe standards have improved in the last 4 or 5 years but I would be wary.

There's a date stamped on them, when I got my BMW it came with the factory one and at 6 years old it was 2 years past it's date. Another year later I decided to replace it. Fancied a shot of the original one though :-)

Set it off in the back garden and like you say, completely underwhelming. I think it's just the size of them, I expected more though. It went everywhere right enough, had to hose down the garage, most of the fence... :giggle:

The vast majority of them are a complete waste of time as they are both not large enough coupled with the fact that the extinguishant now used is very poor at putting fires out!

:o You need at least a 1kg dry powder for a car I would have thought as the small compact ones are useless, what sizes were the ones let off ? cheers - Stuart

0.75kg ones fit into the door pocket horizontally. Fine if you just want to meet the French legal requirements when travelling abroad. Who knows what size you'd need to tackle a serious fire?
