Which after market head unit is best ?

Featured Replies

I have an 06 Fabia TDI Elegance with the usual crappy head unit and even worse speakers.

So if i decided to keep my car what is the best fit head unit for our cars. A unit that fits in to the existing space without much modification and one that will be able to power a decent set of replacement front and rear speakers. A dvd unit is not necessary but DAB would be nice, also i wanted one that had a remote control unit that i can mount onto my steering wheel to give me the ability to change channel and volume without taking my eyes off the road.... any suggestions.

I'm not up to speed on the actual units as such, but any single DIN unit will fit, while keeping the hole/draw. If you get a double DIN, then you'll lose the draw/hole thing as they're twice the size, although they don't sound nessesary to your needs.

What ever you buy, you'll need to get a small trim piece from the dealer for about £2.50 to fill a slight gap that appears as a result of the size diffrence. It doesn't look out of place at all though.

You may need to get an ariel booster (~£10) for it if you use the radio a lot, but it might be ok on the standard ariel. If you get a DAB one I'm not sure where you stand ariel wise.

Personally, I'd just get the radio 1st, as the standard speakers are pretty decent once they have a better amp powering them (inbuilt to the HU), and then upgrade them after if you're still unhappy. Saves wasting money that isn't needed.

You may laugh but my last two head units came from lidl. They are silver crest brand. New one i got in my fabia has sd card and usb slot to 5gig cd player and line in for ipod connection. Its also bluetooth so i can stream music from my mobile to it. Sound quality is pretty good and comes with 5 year guarantee. All for £50.

I've currently got JVC KD-R601 in my car, it's not a bad head unit for the money
