Wheel bearings

Featured Replies

Got my MOT this week, and I fear I'm in need of new wheel bearings at the front....

how much ROUGHLY is this gonna set me back? I have like £75 to go mad with after paying for the test. I've replaced the front tyres and got the windscreen repaired already so I'm hoping nothing else pops up as I'm skint!!

my local vw specalist charged £60 mate.

Recent job by local VW specialist - genuine VW / Skoda pats used

Wheel Bearing kit £41.29

Labour 1.3 hours £58.50

Total 99.79

VAT 19.96

Total £119.79

I had both my front wheel bearings changed too the other day.

The genuine 6-piece wheel bearing repair kits (includes bearing, circlip, hub nut, nut for strut pinch bolt, nut for ball joint and nut for track rod end) cost me £42 per kit including the VAT. Which is with a 20% discount off RRP. Bought from Skoda.

The bearings should be made by NSK, and made in England.

I got Awesome GTI to do the work, as they are the only garage around here that I trust. They charge £55/hr plus VAT, and quote 1.5hrs per wheel bearing. So that's £99 per side.

So my total cost per side was £141. Which turns out expensive when you're getting both done!

I'm very glad that I got Awesome to do it for me though, because it looked like a real pig of a job! Worth it just to have silent running bearings again!

Would this be better in the Fabia section?? :wonder:

doh! I used to drive a Fabia vRS but got rid for an Octy vRS lol. Just havn't updated my profile yet :(

thats a bummer about the price though.... lets hope it passes with it like it is ! :S

I just dug out my invoice and when I had a N/S/F wheel bearing changed in Oct last year I paid £93 all in, about £45 of which was labour. This was at an independent garage in Stoke-on-Trent.

I'd say if it is a driven wheel where the bearing is going I really wouldn't leave it, it could be dangerous.

Believe me, I don't want to leave it. It's just unfortunate that my MOT is a week before payday, on the same month I've paid out car tax and had to replace car tyres....on top of moving home :(

I paid 35 quid for my front wheel bearing and yeah they are abit of a pig to fit or they are when bearing falls to bits when you press centre out and you have to cut it off with grinder

ok well it passed the MOT, and they didn't say anything about my wheel bearings having any play in it....but instead it could be my worn/corroded brakes :wonder:

got it booked it at a garage today, who reckons the top mounts could be giving me the lovely squeaking over bumps, but would this also give a the dreaded bearing noise while cornering because as mentioned the MOT garage said there was nothing wrong with my wheel bearings?
