Maxi-dot consumption display

Featured Replies

Having only had my Yeti for a week, I'm still trying to fathom out some of the Maxi-dot functions. There are two fuel consumption displays; one which shows average comsumption which I understand, and the other which shows current consumption. It's this second one which has me scratching my head as the figures it displays make no sense as they're all over the place. eg: 17.6 , 32.8 , 200.1 , 75.4, 47.9, 100.5 , 88.7, as typical examples and are updated what seems to be about every second. Also very distracting.

My questions are: Is this normal? If so what do they mean? Or have I pressed something I perhaps shouldn't and can it be reversed? Or am I being a complete techno-numpty? :wonder: :wonder: :wonder:

The displays are somewhat gibberish, so much so that I have unticked this box as it is distracting. Go down a hill, leave the car in gear and watch the mpg go to 999.99 or something equally silly. Floor it and it goes down to 15mpg. It is fantastically sensitive and reacts to every slight acceleration and deceleration. I presume it measures the flow of fuel and obviously when you take your foot off the accelerator you are not using any. Follow it for a week or so to see how your driving style affects the figures and then switch it off. I found myself watching the changes so much it was dangerous as I was not watching the road.

By the way, the average one is quite useful so I leave that one on. That changes in a steadier way. You will need to check it against a brim to brim check though as some people, myself included, find it is consistently out by 9-10%. Others find it spot on so you need to see which camp you are in.

Perfectly normal and represent the current actual fuel consuption depending on throtle position and road speed. You will note if you take your foot of the accelerator it goes to _ _ _

This means zero fuel consumtion as it doesn't display over 200 mpg.

This display is only usefull for educating the right foot, I find the average much more useful

Just shows you how an average is calculated. Over a distance your average consumption may be 40mpg, but at any given moment it could be as high as 200mpg (downhill, foot off throttle) or as low as 10mpg (accelerating hard uphill). Interesting for a few moments (and as has been said, useful to see how much your throttle habits can affect immediate consumption) but after that, just switch to the average display.

Cheers gents. I can stop scratching my head now I know it's normal. I know the car is pretty good on diesel, but even I thought 200mpg was a tadj overoptimistic. Pity though.

"200 mpg is the top limit when the throttle is closed and the car is running (for example) downhill. The - - - reading is shown when the car is stationary. i.e. when there is no speed shown for the "miles" to be calculated.

The most accurate??? reading the Maxidot can give is reading 2 when the average mpg is summed over a large number of miles.

To gain a proper reading, keep a diary of litres put in the tank against mileage driven.

Mine regularly shows - - - when I'm coming down hills with my foot off the throttle, so it isn't speed dependent!

And don't forget, OP, that there is a "second" MPG, where the little figure '2' appears top right. This is the cumulative figure over thousands of miles (unless you have reset it) and is possible a wee bitty more accurate.

The '1' recording is of the current journey, the one that varies is your right foot's tutor (teaching you to drive more economically), and the '2' record continues ad infinitum until you hit either 9999 miles or 99 hours - cant recall which.

Hope that clarifies it.

and to go between the 1 or 2, click the right scroll key.

average 1 is for the current average, which is then reset if the car is not used for over 2 hours. It can be reset manually by pressing and holding the right scroll button.

average 2 records up to 999.9 miles or 100 hours I believe before resetting it's self. Once again, you can manually reset by, you guessed it pressing and holding the right scroll wheel.

Remember that you need to have one of the 1's showing to reset the 1's or the 2's to reset the 2's.

Yours may be programmed differently to mine. The display only goes blank when the car is stopped and 200 when running with no throttle. The thing is supposed to be measuring miles travelled in order to provide one parameter for the mpg so a valid reading can be calculated. No speed = no miles covered = no reading.

Your Yeti is a later model so, I guess, an updated program.

Mine is the same. Coasting = 200mpg, but long periods of coasting = ---.
