accessing brake light cluster - 2006 Oct Estate

Featured Replies

Hi folks, have searched to no avail... + not particularly mechanically-minded so go easy on me.

Rear brake light bulb has gone on my 2006 Octavia Estate - the manual 'helpfully' says to remove the 2 small bulbs blocking access to the rear cluster, however does not mention how to remove these (twist?), particularly the upper one which is well hidden behind a large trim panel...

Any tips gratefully received - can't quite bring myself to go to a garage for a simple bulb replacement, but its not quite as starightforward as they seem to make it out to be...

There are 4 standard 382 type bulbs on the White panel, which unclips in the centre with one push. Then two smaller bulbs on the outer edge, these just come out with a gentle pull on the holder, not the wires! The upper most one is quite hard to get at and you may benefit from removing some trim.

If its a brake light bulb then no need to remove the others. Just gently puch the wires out of the way and remove the multi pin connector from the back of the central white holder by squeezing the sides and pulling. The main holder can then be removed by undoing the clip in the middle, although it is a bit of a fiddle to get out from behind the trim. The brake bulb is the top one in the holder and it's a single filament 21w bulb. It acts as both rear light and brake light by a change in voltage through the bulb adjustng the brightness.
