Hypermiling

Wikipedia extract-

Hypermiling definition- is the act of driving using techniques that maximize fuel economy. Those who practice these techniques are referred to as "hypermilers."

Hypermiling is defined by the New Oxford American Dictionary as the attempt to maximize gas mileage by making fuel-conserving adjustments to one's vehicle and one's driving techniques.[1]

My favorite-

Advanced techniques - These are less broadly applicable, some may compromise safety and possibly be illegal in some territories.

Burn and coast. Burn and coast is also known as pulse and glide. This method consists of accelerating to a given speed (the "burn" or "pulse"), followed by a period of coasting (or "gliding") down to a lower speed, at which point the "burn" is reiterated. Coasting is most efficient when the engine is not running, although some gains can be realized with the engine on (to maintain power to brakes, steering and accessories) and the vehicle in neutral, or even with the vehicle remaining in gear. If a manual transmission vehicle coasts with the engine off, it is typically re-started by popping the clutch. The engine control units of some vehicles command a richer fuel setting immediately after the starter is activated, so the bump-start manual transmission vehicle will typically achieve the best fuel economy gains.[16]

Some hybrid vehicles are well-suited to performing the burn and coast. In a series-parallel hybrid (see Hybrid vehicle drivetrain), the internal combustion engine and charging system can be shut off for the glide by simply manipulating the accelerator.

For coasting in gear, a later-model vehicle with a fuel-injected engine will realize more gains from the burn and coast technique than older carbureted engines because the engine control units in most fuel-injected engines will cut fuel to the engine when the car is in gear, the throttle is closed and the engine is running faster than idle speed. This is sometimes referred to as "deceleration fuel cut off". This will often engage while a car is coasting down a hill and is common in both automatic and manual transmission vehicles, although the particular engine speeds at which it will engage vary.

I have noticed that using these techniques my car 1.3MPI gives me pretty nice results in different situations:

- city (big capital city a lot of intersections with traffic light and a lot of traffi jams): around 7,5l/100km

- highway: around 5,5-6l/100km

If I use kill switch during city driving (when I stuck on traffic lights) than my results are even better and I save about 0,5l/100km (it depends on how many traffic light on my driving will be red).

Felicia uses ~0,8l/h during idling so you get 0mpg while you are waiting for green light.

but will you ever beat this guy...

Not in my current car (Felicia) for sure :)

Anyway amazing result - if they will add to this Fabia electric engine and make this car hybrid one, the results (in city driving) will be much better I think.

I always thought that costing in a car was against the law, always thought that the car had to be in-gear, as opposed to free wheeling in neutral.

Think you just have to be in control (subjective). With the DSG it is so easy, literally just move the stick 1 cm to move it in and out, takes fraction of a second. Much more of a pain in the Manual cars ie clutch, select gear, release clutch. Only do in manual when have loads of space.

Some cars and motorcycles have freewheeling. sprag clutches which do this automatically.

Last Police driving session I had a couple of years ago tried to get me to stay in Forth or Fifth right up to the junction and only change at point of stall but I find that so difficult have riding bikes with sequential gearboxes and the slow down change down way of being taught in the 80s.
