Shortest mileage to 1st variable

Featured Replies

After 7K miles my VRS TSi on variable is saying it wants a service after 14K. This is pretty much what it has been saying since new. Lots of people on here have been talking about at least 18-20K for 1st service. As I don't think I abuse the car and it is regularly used on good out of town runs I was wondering if the petrol VRS usually needs a service as soon as that?

Had the first service at just over 14K indicating the second presently around 29K so that sounds about right....short trips

Mine was near 20K with mostly easy motorway driving.

Are you sure that its been configured to be on the variable service regime. Some dealers are reluctant for some reason. Get them to confirm what is set to. My Mk1 was getting between 18 & 20K between services mainly motorway. I've yet to discover what I'll get between services on the Mk2.

Sorry, my comments were so good I posted them twice!

I was about 15-17k for both my variables. Since had it switched to fixed.

Switching yours to fixed is probably a good idea then?

My Scout is going in tomorrow at 5 months and just over 9000 miles old because it claims it needs servicing.

As you can probably guess from the mileage, it doesn't do short journeys.

Varies considerably, I changed mine to fixed purely for the fact that other issues would be picked up sooner, e.g brakes etc.

I mostly do motorway driving but still feel better this way.

Can't see me changing to fixed as just looks like 50% more inconvenience and increased costs visiting the garage every 9400 miles rather than 14000.

I wouldn't say it does lots of short trips really, depends what you call short. Certainly 50%+ of the miles I've done have been motorway > 100 miles.

Surely it only becomes worth it (money-wise) when the variable service interval drops close enough to fixed so the cost of the long life oil becomes a factor?

I seem to do about 14K a year, so I'm quite happy with annual checks that the wheels are still on etc.

Sounds like that ones on fixed maybe?
