some advice on car care

Featured Replies

hi guys,

i have seen alot on the forums mentioning detailing your car.

i do not know much about this as i thought detailing was when someone went over the car with a mchine and it took a skim off the layer of paint to give it back a shiny coat. i never fancied this but i remember being approached about this and this was the method.

anyway, i have had a boxster and 3 mercs previous to ordering the new vrs. i have in the past normally just washed with a shampoo turtle wax and then applied mer on afterwards and rub off after 10 mins or so. i have always found mer to be great if i am honest but just wondered what you guys would recommend.

i have in the house some autoglym super resin polish and another bottle of autoglym high gloss protection to apply after the resin polish.

when i used the autoglym before i was not sure i was that impressed with it but this was about 3 years ago and i maybe never applied properly.

could someone tell me if the reckon autoglym's bottles i have would be enough as a weekly wash after washing with a car shampoo?

i want to protect paintwork as best as possible.

another thing i have in the house is diamondbrite shampoo and polish, i was going to apply this when i purchased the car, as this should last long on the car if i am right? maybe someone can confirm if the diamondbrite is any good and how long it would last?

i know there are many posts about car care and down to individual preference i reckon so this was the order i was going to do it in:

1. wash with diamondbrite shampoo when collect car

2. apply diamondbrite polish after the shampoo

3. weekly wash, use a car shampoo someone could recommend?

4. either apply the autoglym bottles i have or mer?

5. what alloy wheel protection would be best?

hope someone can help.

oh and finally does polish go off as i could not see any dates on the polish and have had for a few years so maybe need to buy some new ones.

thanks again guys

Firstly i'm Grangemouth and own Custom Detailers so if your need some FREE friendly advice or help gimme a shout.

Secondly Diamondbrite if applied properly isnt bad but there are better products out there.

Machine polish is actually removing a very very microscopic amount of clearcoat to even out swirls and scratches, Polishing whether its done by machine or hand should only be done 2-3 times a year a pure polish acts like a moisturizer for the paint and then waxing/sealant seals in the finish

Not sure on the colour of Vrs you have went for but judging you want something durable have a look at Zaino Europe

thanks, i might just give you a shout then if that is ok to get some info.

i have diamondbrite from my previous car i purchased from garage which cost me £200 in the deal, which to be honest i never really asked for. the salesman just through it in to get commission.

so i would like to use if it is easy enough for me to do myself? so is zaino your preference over autoglym and mer?

so you should not polish your car every week with the wash?

thanks again

Head over to DW for more info but I'd skip the Diamondbrite as there's better out there and for less ££. Its more of a dealer thing, given the choice I would let the dealer prep the car. When you get it home do:

Foam and rinse, TBM with wool mitt, Megs Shampoo Plus, rinse. Use Dodo Born slippery and Sonus green clay bar then rinse.

Clean wheels with selection of brushes and shampoo, scrub the tyres.

Dry with a good quality towel like the Duragloss giant towel.

Apply a coat of AG SRP, work small areas until clear then buff off.

Apply AG HD wax, thin layer then buff and repeat.

Wipe down with a QD like Clearkote QD to remove dusting (you should do this after washing and drying each week to remove water spots)

Apply some Optiseal to the alloys, thin coat no need to buff

Apply Megs Endurance gel to the tyre walls using their applicator, again thin layer.

Seal glass with Carlack or just wipe with the Clearkote QD.

Polish and seal the exhuast with Megs NXT metal polish.

Each week just foam, rinse and shampoo with mitt, dry and wipe with QD.
