Skoda Octavia 2001 1.9 tdi Power problems ?

Featured Replies

Hi peeps,

Ok my Skoda Octavia Elegance1.9 tdi 2001 has some sort of power issue's! (It's not the egr valve as 1st thought!)

Symptoms are when driving along it seems to have lost the boost and drives flat and then wont go up in power and just stays the same,(It's as it someone has nicked the turbo and rev counter!) However soon as I flick the key off and then back on it all comes back to life and it revs back up and boost is back! it is intermittent and does it when ever it likes!(Doesn't matter what speed you do it at either!)

I 1st thought it maybe be something like the boost solenoid but there's more sensor on there than a star-ship enterprise!

Any help would be fantastic please ?

Cheers!

might help posting in the octy 1 section! But i as i have the same car as you and i know what your problem probably is no worries!

The issue you have from the symptoms is vastly covered on here, type in Sticky Vanes and youll get a world of information.

Basically where the tdi's have Variable Vane Turbo's they can get stuck if clogged up, sticking if you like, basically it overboosts and that is you issue, if you turn the engine off and turn it on it resets the turbo but then when you build up the revs it happens again?

you may need to get it refurbed or if its like mine which wasn't too bad give it a strong mix of redex in the fuel and my problems have been sorted for the last 2 years! Some Won't agree but £4 is a lot cheaper and less time consuming than taking a turbo out! it only took maybe two tanks of strong mix and it started pulling really well again!

As i said type it in to the search function and you'll find a lot!

Cheers buddy I will try that! When I flick the key off and back on the car drives fine with no more problems for hours! I can drive it for days with no issues then the next day it will just happen! Where are the veins bud ?

Thank you

inside the turbo the rotate as they come onto boost. sometime giving it the full beans will 'unclog' it! usually caused by sooting up, mine used to do it but only ervery so often but annoyed me as i couldn't get over 65 when it went into 'limp mode'! ill try to find the diagram that explains a vvt turbo but im on the phone at the moment!

the variable vanes are shown moving slightly in that video. there are what get'stuck' and cause the car to go into limp mode

Sounds to me like you need a MAF. I had the same problem in my SEAT Toledo Tdo 1.9 110BHP 2001. There is a Merc part that is much better than the VAG Bosch one and worth getting.. Not sure I can lay my hands on exactly what that part is now.. Maybe someone on the SEAT forums would know...

Well I have a spare maff so I might swap that but it just doesn't seen to be the symptoms of a maff though! Worth a try though! lol

99.9% sure it will be the sticking VNT vanes, I had the same on my old 1.9tdi. Fault code would probably show an overboost condition.
