Unusual Indicator Hazard Problem

Featured Replies

This is an odd problem that appeared a couple of days ago. On some not all occasions indicators started to flash only once. First thought was that the hazard unit had gone U/S, but on closer investigation the Hazards worked. Extracted the Switch as far as possible while connected to the loom and tried to reseat connectors. Ended up with the same problem sometime they work and other times they don't. Checked further into the hazards and found that if tested with the engine off then they wouldn't work, but if tested with the engine running then they worked and continued to work if the engine was switched off. The ignition on without the engine running also had no affect on getting the hazards to work. Now I have only used the hazards a handful of times and the engine has always been running so they may always have operated this way, but certainly the turn indicators used to work properly.

Now to find something to enable me to remove the radio so I can get to the cables and see if something is amiss there, or at least replace the hazard switch if that proves to b the problem.

think the relay is in the switch, its a common problem, so try changing the switch before pulling the dash apart to chase wires

Although I haven't heard of that particular failure mode before, the hazard switch (with built-int relay, as Oet points out) is prone to failure.

Defo the hazard switch/relay m8. I have this problem all the time, either it stops flashing, flashes irregularly or sticks on. I just flick the hazards on once and it starts working properly, I really should get a new relay but I'm too lazy lol

yep.. hazard switch, had this in my last octy... easy to change, and not overly expensive, from what i recall

Had a similar problem myself about a year ago, switch would malfunction ocasionally, found that removing the switch and reconnecting it would solve the problem, however sometimes I had to do this a few times to get it to work. What I found to work best was to gently rub the gold coloured connectors with fine sand paper and then reposition the switch.

However I got sick of having to do this regularly, so I went to local Skoda main dealer and bought a replacent switch, when I fitted this, the switch wouldnt work at all! ( it looked slightly different, but was told it had the same part number.

Anyhow I sprayed the original switch, housing ect with copious amounts of electric contact cleaner, let it dry re installed the original switch and havnt had a problem since (touch wood)

From this and other minor problem over the last 3 years I have found that Skoda electric connection appear to be very sensitive to dust particles :)
