Permanent Four Wheel Drive?

Featured Replies

My Yeti is now ordered!! (170 4x4), but i realise i don't know if it's permanent 4x4. another thread implied the rear wheels have 5-10% at all times and the 4x4 only kicks in when it detects slippage or if the Off Road button is employed. is that true?

Partially, yes. The off-road button is not involved in the 4WD system, but alters the throttle response, ESP and controls descent speed. Check the on-line manual for a more complete description.

Basically, the car is front wheel drive with a permanent power take-off driving the propshaft for the rear axle. There is some friction in the Haldex coupling, so there is always a little of the power going to the rear axle. The Haldex coupling progressively closes and shifts power to the rear axle if various sensors detect a slip in the front axle. Ditto for the coupling in the limited slip rear axle.

If you are worried that the reaction time of the system will be too slow then don't. I went through 2+ months of snow and ice in Northumberland from November onwards and the Yeti was magnificent. It just deals with the situation. I appreciate there is comfort in pressing a button or flicking a switch to give permanent 4wd but the Haldex system works. In effect it does give permanent 4wd, it just doesn't use it to the maximum when it is not required.

Offroad Mode also changes how the EDL system works!

There is no limited slip differential in the Yeti, only an electronic/hydraulic system that applies brakes on a spinning wheel.

On the Adventure day yesterday I could feel the Haldex driving the rear wheels. It was awesome on mud. Luckily James acted as a mud plough so we didn't ground out so muchemoticon-0140-rofl.gif
