Oil leak between engine & gearbox

Featured Replies

Hi.

My 2.0 FSI has just been in for the 80,000 mile service and they are reporting an oil leak between the engine and the gearbox - some seal needs replacing but to do so means seperating the flywheel and gearbox from the engine - estimate about £300 for the job at the dealer.

Has anyone had a similar problem - how urgent is this likley to be - dealer is a bit vague. Its engone oil leaking, not gearbox oil. I wondered if I should get the clutch done at the same time, how long does a clutch normally last?

I will be keepingt he car for at least another 12 months.

I may go to a different garage for the work as its maily all labour costs.

Hi Paul, If it is not abused I would expect a clutch to last the life of the car nowadays. The way you describe it, it sounds like it is the rear main oil seal on the crankshaft that is leaking so yes the gearbox and flywheel would need to be removed to gain access to it. You are right about the costs though, the seal is probably less than £20. I would be inclined to not wait too long to have it done as if the leak was to get worse then the oil will get onto the clutch and you would definately need a new friction plate in there. Hope that helps.

The dealer warned me about oil gettining into the clutch. I suppose its unavoidable then. Just need to decide if this is a main dealer job or if I can find/trust a local garage to do it.

No reason to think that a decent local garage, especially if they are a VAG specialist, can't do the job and do it well. On this occasion I think Google if your friend.
