Those flipping headlight motors

Featured Replies

Just picked up a new cluster from Billys scrap yard lol

The motor was dead so switched mine over in an attempt to cure the rattly headlight problem I've had for years.

Changed the motors on both ligths about 4 yrs back

Conclusion ........ Problem still there !!!

It appears that when plugged in the nearside motor will pulse making it look lke the beam is rattling about, but only when you tap the light unit,

So when I turn the engine on it just jumps around because of the vibration of the engine

So .......If it ain't the motor(cos they all do it) what the hell causes this random triggering of the motor action.

Does this thread make sense :wonder:

Lol cheers dave I've had a tidy up today.

That's pants. So the motors are dead in them. So its the motor in that side that's makin it flutter? Might be an earth problem?

Possibly just another dodgy motor?

It seems to be a common fault, so chances are a second hand lamp will have the same problem.

He used his motors.

I was also thinkin that.

Best call J again fatty. Let me know if you do and if they sorted down there after the weekend. Then ill be able to get my stuff.

Sorry it didn't work

No worries Billy not your fault lol

The motors are mine which I changed about 3 yrs ago, drivers side wouldn't move up and down but the passenger side was rattling around, this cured the driversides issue, but the rattle has been there eversince, hence me thinking cluster loose inside.

Fast forward to today new cluster, motor that does the normal up down, but still frigging rattles about, of course when the engine is running you can't hear owt, with ignition on I hear the motor spazzing out but only if I tap the light.

I re did this as I couldn't understand what I did earlier :giggle:

So what we now think is that the motor I bought way back whenever was knackered from the off ?

Dirty ******s

Sorry, misread your original post.

Was the motor you bought a while back new or used?

If it was used it's probably cream crackered.

I don't think that they're that dear new. I also think that there are a few different part numbers, so they have probably been superseded to try and make them more reliable. The current ones are the same part as for a MkIV Golf I think.

If there is an intermittant break in the Brown\White wire or in the adjuster, you can get the same problem

Brand spanking genuine motors

Just been out there now like a tit in in the dark (neighbour just thought I was odd)

The two orignal motors (just found them in a drawer, yes I hoard ****) do exactly the same as the 3yr old replacement, basically fine until you touch/tap them then it's on/off on/off over and over again so engine vibes just make the mental constantly.

I would try them on the other side but cba right now lol

If there is an intermittant break in the Brown\White wire or in the adjuster, you can get the same problem

If the the three motors are all doing the same then I guess its the loom, tell me more about this wire I'm colour blind so bear with me, is it in the cluster or off the big block on the back of the cluster.

Edit, gotta be the loom as the new(used) cluster was fine on Billys donor car, I got a multimeter what next ???

Too many motors so little time :giggle:

the most common fault is water getting in the plug...Go to maplins and buy the electric spray take motor out leave in house to dry out and spray in the plug with spray and leave over night,It worked with mine it has been 2 weeks now and all okay.

I had a problem with not screwing down the adjuster arm to the reflector far enough. Which caused the light to rattle up and down when driving along. But yours does sound like the plug/wiring.

You need a wiring diagram for the headlights to check the condition of the wires. Then put your multimeter inbetween the headlamp plug terminals and the other end (dunno where that is but probably fuse box or light angle adjustment switch).

Or clean out the plug with some electrical contact cleaner, and inspect all the terminals.

Assuming it has the 8-pin connectors, then the control wire is connected to pin 7.

All the headlight range adjuster does is output a voltage that changes with the adjustment wheel. The range control motors follow this voltage, so if the voltage jumps up and down, then so do the headlights.

Now we are cooking here

You must be talking sense as I don't know what your on about lol

I'll dive over Maplins lunch time and grab a can of cleaner. With reagrds to the voltage, if I used a multimeter in the wire in the cluster first (three wire which goes to the motor) what would I be looking for roughly ?

Cheers for the thoughts as you can seeing this electrical stuff is all new to me

Given them a blast with Maplins finest, and guess what .......They are getting better

They now need a good clout to get them freaking out, just given them another liberal blast, see what happens later !!!

I'm now buzzing my nut off as well ...free bouns :giggle:
