Slow down my friend, take a deep breath and analyse the situation. (can tell i work in customer service business)

Before writing off and getting the axe down on your new purchase identify a number of things.

- If it is not smoking, then good

- If it is not making banging, clunking, metalic noises, then also good

- if you are not lossing water or oil then also good.

So pocket is not going to get a huge dent in it.

Misfiring is a common problem on our cars and the 1.8 turbo VAG group and can be down to a number of problems.

It is not uncommon when 1 coil pack goes to then have another 1 go shortly afterwards. It is also not uncommon to get a faulty replacement coil pack also.

So why not replace the coil pack with one from another cylinder and then see if problem follows the coil pack.

then report back your findings.

From there we can suggest other ideas. Like injectors, plugs, wiring to coilpacks etc etc...

As above, most likely is coilpacks. I tried swappign and changing but it can be hard to track down. In the end I got 4 new ones and its been fine since.

Just run car with 1 coilpack not connected, then you will soon see if car feels worse or not.

And go through 1 by one in that way....

Mine though was really intermittent and under full load only. Idle, revving when stationary was OK.

and also check the wiring from the coil packs as this is prone to breaking which will also cause a misfire.

No need to shout either :p

no noises, no smoking or no losses of any fluids (water, oil etc....) i`ve run it back to another garage for them to do a dignostics on it and compression test, as i am useless with cars at the best of time when it actually comes down to modern technology and engines (in saying that i can change the coil packs that dont look that bad and from what i`ve seen so far cant believe they use pliers looks like a cable clip under it would be better and then lift out... but these coil packs are still playing on my mind as the clips i have noticed on 2 of them are broken and look very brittle (lovely engeniring these days) so i should no more tomorrow but skint after just buying her and having a family holiday (hence car outside caravan in introduce myself) as we had saved for it all grrrrrrr @ life sometimes

SYMPTONS ARE : BAD START UP

DRIVES OK BUT WITH NO PULL AND A SPLUTTER UPTO 40 THEN CRUISES BUT NO STRONG POWER ONLY A VERY LITTLE PULL

IDLE DROPS LIKE CRAZY WHEN BRAKEING LIKE IT WANTS TO CUT OUT

FINGERS CROSSED !!!

soz....... just having a rant lol

Clean the throttle body mate, this seems to resolve some idle and rough running symptoms.

Unfortuatley these cars are getting quite old these days so you should be prepared to spend out on maintainence. Fact of life these days. Not nice to pay out afer just buying one though. £1750 is not a lot to pay for these cars so adding a bit of service / repair has not robbed you.

What code did the diagnostics find then?

MAF could also cause those symptoms

As your symptoms sound like a number of items it could be, post the error codes, otherwise we are guessing a little.

P.S no need to rant with your upper case at us.......we are helping

This could prehaps be leading somewhere into the unkown.... right like i said i`m no mechanic but i`ll explain to the best of my knowledge.... Brakes felt a bit crappy hence why i asked in introduce yourself anyone have a job stopping these, the pipeline to the servo had been cut off either end (don`t no why) and blocked of with bolts as spotted by the mechanic looking and no wonder i was having a job stopping her and also a rear bleed nipple was leaking when he put fluid in as there was non in the sytem at all but this pipe and nipple have been replaced and servo is now working fine so brakes are as they should now be working fine IF THIS HELPS..... But also the reader wasn`t picking up and brake fault codes at the 1st garage i took it to then the guy just said your engines shot m8 its a valve or piston problem (but did no compression test) but i`ve fixed the brakes but said out of sympathy there would be no charge (but i give him a tenner anyway for his troubles) but was the last thing on my mind

If you do want coils, these are cheapest:

Don't be so sure. Skoda have just re issued a recall covering some 1.8T and 2.0T engines and depending on what type of coil pack is fitted will replace all four under warranty regardless of age and mileage so it's worth contacting a dealer to see if your car is elidgeable..

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but Tech1e, do you know what version coil packs are affected? Mine has BREMI version L's from 2003 in it. Fingers crossed

I read somewhere that it is for version prior to "L" but could be wrong. Read that on Audi forum.

confirmed ------ dead compression on cylinder 3 so its a strip down job grrrrrrr oh well 3 weeks in and Ouch !!!

Yeah, I read that too. My car was apparently recalled early in its life to have the L versions installed. It's just when tech1e said they had re-issued the recall, maybe the L version is failing too. If it was OK, I can't see why they brought out the R and D versions.

I've emailed Skoda UK anyway to find out. Let's see what they say.

Bad luck the the OP though. Could it possibly be a hole in the headgasket, rather than worn piston rings?
