oops - a nasty knock.. update - now sorted

Featured Replies

The Beasty had first service Monday, and I asked the dealer to check out a knock that seems to be coming from under the front somewhere, and I can hear sometimes when driving slowly over bumpy surfaces. They didn't find anything, but it was still evident as I drove home, to me. I have only noticed it recently, and I am convinced it is getting more apparent - like something loose getting looser. Perception is that it is on drivers side. I turned out boot and glove box and checked seats etc, just in case I was being deceived by something in the car and, having eliminated that possibility, took it in yesterday to get the tech to drive out with me.

To my great relief, he was able to hear it, and reproduce it too (there's always the fear these things mysteriously 'heal up' for the time a tech is present) and outcome is that Beasty goes in tomorrow to have it checked out. He is not sure at this stage what it is, but says a possibility is the front anti roll bar/joints (I think that's what he said - it's quite a flimsy looking vertical rod alongside the shock) - but he has never had one become a problem so early in a vehicles life, 10K miles .

I know things like this happen - I am almost pleased I have a problem, having read about some others here! I had a Golf wheel bearing go after 2k miles! But I shall be really pleased if they locate a fault, positively, and fix it! Here's hoping!

Lets hope they find it. They reproduced my DSG issue but couldn't/wouldn't investigate it more.....until I remove the remap and the flappy paddle MFSW.

Hi

I had what sounds a very similar problem to yours on my 1.2tsi, the mechanic from Savilles at Kiddiminster initially could'nt find the problem but after a test with me driving he managed to hear the noise.

They gave me a courtesy car for 24hours and I was told the following day that it was the anti roll bar couplings which caused the problem, apparently they just needed tightening.

I only had 3000ml on the clock at the time since when I've put another 2000ml with no re-occurrence.

Hope this helps all best Bob

Thanks folks. Well, the unpleasant knock turned out to be the lower end joint of the anti roll bar link on the drivers side. This is a vertical rod, about 1/4 inch diameter, and about 14 inches long, with a rubber mounted joint each end - the lower one connecting to the anti roll bar end. This joint was faulty - the tech brought the old bar out and you could feel that it had noticeable play, and you could get metal to metal contact just by pushing in and out. The joints/mounts are integral with the link - so the whole link was replaced under warranty and, voila!, no nasty knock now. Hurrah! :)

I expressed some concern that The Beasty has had a very placid, 10 K mile existence, virtually all on tarmac, and the consensus is that this was just a faulty component from new. The knock was very clear to hear when driving over lumpy sur faces, particularly at very low speeds. It was not a dangerous fault per se, but needed fixing, for sure - I mention this in case anyone else has a similar problem.

RH - that's a begger re the DSG fault - I'll take a look at the thread to see wot you intend to do...I spose it's understandable..(?)
