electrical problem

Featured Replies

my felicia fun car has had a bit of a disaster.the starter jammed on ruining the starter and ignition switch and melting the yellow wire to the solenoid. replaced starter motor and fitted push button starter.problem now is i have no windscreen washers, headlights or brakelights.is this a wiring problem or a relay problem.could an auto electrician bypass this all fuses are ok

The original wiring uses the yellow wire as an earth for various things, I think, so if its not connected your lights won't work, so if your push button start setup has meant this is not connected that will be why....

thanks for that have replaced ignition switch without fitting it,as i can not find how to remove old switch.problem is the same.have removed instrument panel and there are two yellow wires to ignition switch .the one to the starter is well melted but the other is ok.could the melting have damaged something in the wiring loom .can wiring be repaired without removing loom.any advice appreciated

When you say it melted, does it have a connection between the two ends? It's possible it's damaged something in the loom, yes. Turn the ignition on and see what you get at the oonnector that should be on the starter.

thanks,i have power to the starter via the melted cable<only insulation is melted>i may try running new supply to footbrake switch ,light switch, wiper switch from battery using in line fuses.do you think this would work .thanks again

the yellow wire earths the relay that powers up the lights, wipers, heater fan etc. easy way is to rewire the yellow wire as it was origionally or pick up the relay wire and give it an earth..

try earthing the melted yellow wire at the starter end and see if everything works then.

rewired wire to starter ok found out switch to brake lights was broken .replaced and now ok removed broken ignition switch and replaced but cannot turn ignition key possibly lock is broken which may have been the origional problem as it is stuck at ignition possition which may have led to starter engaging all the time.probably an intermitant fault as it was working or have i activated immobilisor would the immobilisor lock the barrel or simply immobilise the electrics. power to wipers and headlights so suspect both switches have gone the same as brake switch.removed new ignition switch but lock still wont turn can barrel be replaced or is it better to replace steering lock

thanks again for advice
