Timing Belt help!

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I am new to Skoda and this forum, Heres the deal I bought a second hand Skoda Fabia 2002 52 reg silverline with 102,000 miles with a full service history. I cannot find any history regarding the timing belt and I am not sure if it gets changed on a normal service? I am scared to death that it will go on me before my garage are going to fit a new one anyway in a weeks time, I will only be doing about 100 miles until then.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Matt.

sorry forgot to mention its petrol :)

What engine has your Fabia got?

  • Author

hi its a 1.4 petrol

wouldnt worry, 100 miles compared with what it has done is nothing, get the water pump done at the same time

Is it a 1.4 8v (MPI) or a 1.4 16v?

The 16v is the only petrol with a timing belt, the rest have a chain.

Hi Thanks for all your advise, It says 1.4 MPI on the boot

Thanks

Matt

I just brought my 06 1.4 16v last weekend from the dealer and I had to make them to change the cambelt before I took the car of them even tho it only got 40k on the clock. I'm no expert in these engines but it better be safe and sorry.

EVERY 4YEARS OR 60,000 MILES BELTS AND TENSIONERS SHOULD BE CHANGED!!!!! Most cambelt OEM kits include the bolts and tensioners, but NOT the idleing pulleys!!! Best to get these changed every second cambelt change (if you can afford it, every change!)I also get the altenator belt done every cambelt change, also I get the alternator belt tensioner and water pump changed every second cambelt change ( :swear: EXPENSIVE) but cheaper than a FUBAR engine!!!!

But if you have 1.4lt 8v MPI engine code AZE,AZF,AME,AQW,ATZ,...I think you have timing chains!! Will get back to you and edit this post!!

Yep.. you have a double-row timing chain!!! Just make sure you keep on top of the oil changes (inc filter) and use good quality oil of the correct grade!!!

Hi Everyone,

Just letting you all know that my skoda fabia has just come back from having the timing chain fitted and it sounds like a rolls royce now :) loads better and my mechanic says its a good car, so I am a happy bunny now :)

Thanks for all your advise much appreciated!

Matt

Thats what we're here for! B)

Aye, the timing chain on the 1.4 mpi can loosen and get really rattly over time, that happened to my last Fabia. No bother to replace it though. Glad it all went well :)
