;) 300bhp!

Nice. Are you having to give him a jump start though?

Because without it turning over, I'd say it was running approximately 0bhp.... :p

Unfortunately yes I was, the altenator belt snap showing a RS4 who's boss! :giggle:

But now the gearbox is goosed!!

Anyone have a spare F28 gearbox for sale? its going to be over £1000 to fix :o

i like that idea, instead of a wheezy old diesel lump have some thing with some raw old fashioned grunt.

i bet that would be total ball ache from start to finish, the r36 is an fsi engine isn't it?

Yep but we are still doing it on OEM management :)

thought the 4mo got the 12v? and was only the R36 (passat) that got the 24v???

Love that engine it squeezes in most  dont forget the extra cash for the charger :smirk:

Mk3 Golf and corrado are 12v

Mk4 4mo and r32 are 24v

R36 is 24v but different engine, 9 degree V6.

you must have balls of steel then.. i've heard that the wiring those up can be a pig, i guess you must be using the entire loom and clocks and fusebox and everything (just to make it that little bit easier :giggle: )

I liked the sneaky road legal rover on last weeks fifth gear with a merlin tank engine (same as spitfire) fitted. I doubt if it went round bends well though!

Some years ago there was a custom made Rolls Royce lookalike with a spitfire engine in. Used to cruise the autobahns at 200+mph until it caught fire and burnt out. Certainly looked great with a bonnet almost as long as some limo's.

John Dodds "Beast" is what you mean!!!

Plenty of stuff if you Google it..still alive and well in Spain!!

Friend of my fathers ran a garage and he used to go shooting with my dad in the 60's....rebuilt old blower Bentley's etc....then decided to put a Ferrari engine from a wrecked one he got his hands on and fitted it into a Fiat 500 (original one...well it was the 60's). Only enough room left for the driver apparently!!! :o

Or how about the mother of all cheque book cars.....Jay Leno..who else!!! B)

Hells bells! 500-600 ponies, and he makes NO mention of any suspension or brake upgrades??!

Its mentioned under Drivetrain  (well brakes are), it does look like the dampers have been changed but no mention of what they are

AP racing 365mm front brake kit with DS2500 pads

Braided front brake flexi hoses

New rear brake shoes

All new brake pipes

Still, its a rather un-usual upgrade but nice to see something a little different B)

Fair enough - except they're not drivetrain, which is why I'd missed them ;)

Having driven a standard L200, suspension would be the first thing I would have changed! Before even considering tweaking/changing anything else...

The quote 'I had it over on the door handles' has never been quite so apt emoticon-0108-speechless.gif

If he thinks they are Drivetrain, how much trust would you have in the whole conversion :giggle:

They both used R Meteor (Centurion tank) engines, not Merlins. There are some pretty fundamental differences between the 2, like the Merlin being supercharged, and designed for (near) constant speed running and the Meteor being neither. Source being Sir Stanley Hooker, and if you feel like arguing with him about RR aero and tank engines, you're a braver (and more stupid) man than I.

The one in John Dodds "Beast" is a Merlin....see this from Evo Mag;

http://www.evo.co.uk/features/features/228789/the_beast.html

And a direct quote from the man himself:

We open up the bonnet (it’s a two-man job). The dark Merlin nestles peacefully, its last two cylinders tucked back under the bulkhead. ‘It was very advanced in its day, this engine. Very,’ says Dodd seriously. ‘This one came from a Boulton Paul Balliol aeroplane. It’s all aluminium, two sparks per cylinder – that’s an aviation rule, of course – and dry sumped. I changed mine to wet, though. Helps with the cooling.’ As does the 10-gallon oil reservoir and a radiator the size of an Aga. No-one’s quite sure how much power the engine produces, but ‘about a thousand brake’ is John’s best guess.

Which still doesn't add up; a quick web search shows that the Balliol had a Merlin 35, which is good for about 1250bhp. "About 1000bhp" would suggest a Merlin II or III at 1030bhp (dry sumped), and the source would then have to be a Spitfire 1 or II, Hurricane I or II, or Defiant I or II.

As for "a wet sump helps with the cooling", that would be a first according to most engine designers. The 10 gallon oil tank would help though, provided the operational coolant circulates through it, in which case the car is actually dry sumped, maybe with a bigger than usual collector.

He probably couldn't exactly state the BHP so saying about 1000bhp is good enough because he's removed the supercharger and fitted an American 4-barrel Holley carburettor!!

....and as for the heat issue ask him yourself:
