battery charging voltage at idle

Featured Replies

Hi!

If you turn on all electric consumers like electric mirrors,AC,lights, fog lights...what would be a normal charge for the battery?Idle running

I have 12.6V at idle and all electric consumers up,and if I accelerate to 2000rpm imediatly rises up to 13.8V

Is that normal?

Charge, or voltage across the battery?

13.8v sounds reasonable to me, I believe that anything over 14.4v is likely to toast your battery!

hmmm...I measured the voltage on the battery conectors. Is another way to measure more directly from alternator?

13.8V is ok but is at 2000rpm

that 12.6V at idle worries me

The battery looks fine, the car starts easy at -15 degrees

that 12.6V at idle worries me

That was idle, but fully loaded... (or at least that was the way I read the OP).

Likewise, in which case I'd say things are fine.

right...but I still was expecting about 13.somethingV at idle fully loaded...or am I wrong?

wouldn't worry then

12.6 fully loaded at idle is OK, provided the voltage does not progressively fall with time (ie the alternator is supporting the load without discharging the battery)

sounds fine to me the alt will not produce max amps untill it is revving a bit, and anything over 12.4 is charging.
