Removing a stuck oil filter

Featured Replies

After any advice. Got oil filter that's got a little too attached to the engine. Been using a nylon strap wrench. Wasn't making too much impact as it kept slipping so covered the filter with sand paper to get a better grip. Seemed to work however still no joy. Filter started to collapse then the nylon snapped :(

Apart from attacking it with a hammer and screw driver, which I'm not too keen on as knowing me the outer casing will come off. Leaving the threaded part still attached to the block. Anyone got any ideas?

Also discovered that the previous garage has snapped 3 bolts off the inlet manifold :(

It's not a skoda my the way.

oh dear, I would have suggested hammer and screwdriver, how longs it been on?

Looking back over the cars history about 12k which is correct for the service interval.

If it's a standard metal case filter then i used to use screwdriver on the lip at the engine side of the filter and tap it round with a hammer, never had one I couldn't get off but it will depend on your access.

Hammer a screwdriver through it and turn it that way. Worked for me on my old car when tje filter wouldnt budge. I tried to get it off with the chain version of that strap and it just kept slipping and crushed it.

Access is very little. Think I'll try and get some grips tomorrow.

I've only ever once had to resort to the hammer and screwdriver through case method. The filter case did tear a bit, but the torque broke. If you can't get a filter off with a strap or chain wrench, it's generally an indication that the last guy to replace the filter was a gorilla! ;)
