Indicator noise

Featured Replies

Good morning everyone. Need some help if possible. Bought a new Superb Mk1 a couple of years ago and ever since day one I've had a problem with a noise inside the cabin. The noise is identical to that from the indicator flasher but without the lights flashing. The noise comes once and then stops but it could come again at any time. Some days I don't hear it at all and other days it's so frequent it drives me mad. It's been back to the dealers a number of times but sod's law they've never heard the noise. The last occasion a few weeks ago they said they would plug the car into their computers but they couldn't find any faults.

I'm at my wits end and I would be grateful for any advice or suggestions.

Thanks.

The flasher unit is essentially a relay, so if it sounds the same it could be one of the relays under the dash above the pedals. Is the noise coming from there?

Another noise that can sound similar is a blend door in the a/c.

Where is the noise coming from? What have you eliminated so far?

The problem you have is copper swarf in the column indicator switch. It's another VAG perennial and has been going for the last 10 years or so...

Get an old towel and stuff it under the switch and cowling. Buy a tin of Electrolube Servisol Super 10 switch cleaner with a plastic tube on the nozzle. Give the switch contact assembly a good blast with cleaner whilst working the switch in all positions to flush out the copper dust from the contacts. Repeat a few times as necessary.

I do this as part of my annual maintenance but if the switch has been left dry for too long, a new one may be required.

Bad design and poor switch lubricant - yet another fault VAG knew all about before they stickered the Superb.

rotodiesel.

It is most likely the flasher relay. Clicks intermittently without any lights activated.

Best to remove the centre console vents, unless you are lucky enough to have longer cable to flasher relay - it is easy to pull out, but a pig to put back in.

In all likelihood, the relay just needs to be cleaned , as it has grease all over rear connector by now. Don't ask how I know :wonder:

The back connectors can do with being twisted a litle using pliers, that way they will ensure good contact for years.

just had mine done at DM KEITH's, the main dealer here in Leeds, same bloody annoying random clicking...luckily for me my jalopy is still under warranty, so they replaced the hazard relay and the indicator stalk for me..much better with no noise

I had this problem, turned out to be the blinker arm, which was broken. Dealer installed a new one and no problems since.

Armed with this information I have gone back to the dealer who has checked the hazard relay and found it to be faulty. New one on order. I'm grateful for all the replies and suggestions. Thank you.
