VR6/G60 Clutch

Featured Replies

Clutch has gone on the VRS, looking to upgrade to the VR6 clutch plus SMF, not really sure where to start. Could somebody provide me with part numbers etc? Would be helpful, plus where to source the parts, what bolts I'd need etc.. Is it an easy conversion? Could my local independent clutch specialist do it? Any negative aspects to the conversion? Any help would be appreciated.

Everything you need to know is in here: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/150787-clutchflywheel-review/

Part numbers etc. are in the thread linked to at the beginning of the above thread.

Cheers for that mate. A very helpful thread indeed. But what's the general consensus on the conversion? Do the pros outweigh the cons (if any)? Is it an easy job to do, I'm assuming it's a straight swap with no messing around...

There are no cons as far as I'm concerned. But in theory the clutch on a SMF will wear quicker than a clutch on a DMF, and the DMF will protect the gearbox from harsh torque spikes theoretically.

The pros are that it's more reliable, lower cost and has a higher torque capability. It's also a lighter weight setup, and allows you to fry the clutch without worrying about damaging the expensive DMF.

Once you've converted it to a traditional setup, the G60 flywheel should last forever, and the clutch kits are only £70 a pop for OEM parts, and probably much cheaper if you shop about.

It is indeed a straight swap, and nothing needs modifying. Everything fits perfectly if you get the right bits.

+1

I had this done a few weeks ago, as said a lot cheaper than using DMF. Even the G60 clutch i cheaper than the Octavia one.

The only thing I found was for the first coupe of hundred miles, at low rpm the clutch would judder/vibrate slightly. When parking etc. was most noticeable, its fine now.

Thanks for the info guys, will be sourcing the parts at some point tomorrow. The vr6 clutch from GSF - is it an LUK? Have heard conflicting things about LUK. I'm assuming Sachs do a vr6 clutch too, anybody with experience of both?

Yeah the GSF one is LUK, as long as you ask for the OEM option.

Nothing wrong with LUK as they make the original clutch and flywheel fitted to the car at the factory.

They are a German OE supplier, just like Sachs.

if you want the sachs one you can get them at vwspares

Eurocar parts to a complete conversion kit :)

Eurocar parts to a complete conversion kit :)

be careful to ensure it is G60 flywheel so if the clutch goes again it is easy to get a spare

Cheers guys, have purchased most of the bits now, waiting on bolts for the clutch. Got the vr6 clutch from GSF, G60 flywheel from VW + bolts from VW. Paid slightly more than I was expecting however. After a lot of calling around to try and negotiate the best price for parts, Clutch - £93, Flywheel - £164 (Nobody would agree to have the DMF in return for surcharge), about £20 for the bolts. Should get it fitted at some point this week. Although away for the next couple of weeks so will be looking forward to picking it up when I'm back. See what all the fuss is about ;)
