confused by rim sizes / offsets etc

Featured Replies

I got 205/55 r16 tyres on a 6 1/2 J *16 H2 rim with an offset of 50mm (ET 50)

I have been assured that a second hand set of 7J 16 ET 45 will fit, these rims are fitted with 215/55 16 tyres.

Is this correct.

I presume the one rim is a 1/2 inch wider than the other, will my smaller tyres be Ok and what about the offset

HMMM

It appears i was correct in my assumptions as to how offset is measured.

therefore the 7 J rim with a 5mm (50mm-45mm)smaller offset will be 11mm (being 6mm +5mm)nearer the bodywork of the car ie nearer the car ergo it could catch on sommat.

Hmmm

Yes, not a problem.

By comparison I run 8x18s, ET42 on a 225/40/18, so you'll have no problems fitting those in there :)

yep, as wardy says you should be fine.

Your maths is correct regarding the offset and width - you'll be 11mm closer to the bodywork. Inner clearance virtually the same.

tyres: the different tyre size will give you 1.7% difference in the speedo reading, which is virtually nothing. put it another way when your speedo says you're doing 60 you'd be doing 61.

looks like you'll be fine on both counts. post some pics when they're on :)

Always good to over-read slightly, and as Rob says - easily within tolerance. If it's only 1mph out at 60, you're probably going to end up with a more accurate speedo than standard :)

I am wanting the rims without tyres, the tyres as are on the rims are near done.(2nd hand rims)

Actually an on-line rim calculator says the wider rim is cancelled out by the smaller offset so I will only be 1mm nearer the car BUT 11mm furthur out......scratchs head.......I am however having difficulty in "seeing" that.

Thanks folks

The new wheels are .5" wider (1.27cm). The lower offset will push the wheel slightly further out in the arch, as the offset is decreasing from 50 to 45. An increase of 5mm.

So adding those together means that the wheels will sit 1.77cm further out into the arch. As the existing 6.5J ET50 wheels sit quite far in on the Octy, this won't be a problem and it'll improve the stance of the car.

Hope this helps.

Wardy, thank you , I finally got my head round the in's & out's of off-set's as I mulled it over on the way home, dont know why I could not "see" it previousley.

Erm

actually the 1/2 " equats to approx 12.7mm devide by 2 = 6.5mm - 5mm difference in off-set = 1.5mm difference

Simples

Really :D

Why do scrappies need VAT :(
