Possibly not fair to compare my 1.4TDI Greenline but for what its worth...

Today in the warm weather on the 50 mile run home. Dual carriageway, towns and country sections I got indicated 74mpg. In reality this is more like 69mpg.

The car is now at 530 miles from a full tank with 2 bars remaining until reserve. I will be filling it up at about 600 miles which is normally about when it beeps for reserve.

The temperature outside makes a huge difference. As much as 10 mpg. I dont accept the winter diesel theory. On the same tank I did a journey when the temp was about 3 degrees in the morning. Same run at 20 degrees gained 10 mpg on the same tank. Trust me, my driving style is always the same. My journey is identical over its 24,000 miles a year.

All the above is not spirited driving. Nor is it tree hugging hippy driving. Just going with the flow driving normally. If you believe book figures then the Greenline is 7mpg better for the combined figure. So I would guess a standard TDI (I think mines the same as the 80 ish HP version) would get 62 mpg on a warm day. Probably better driven gently.

At the moment with town driving and a bit of a hard drive I'm getting on average 50MPG, because I don't use the car that often the car is not getting up to temperture.

On my hard drive the other weekend I was returing 52MPG over 200 miles, I will report back next week when I go on holiday to see my mpg climb up at steady driving and no hard driving on a 400 mile trip but at the moment I'm looking at a 600 mile tank according to the trip computer.

Hi Seb, Your version, according to book figures does slightly less mpg to the tune of 2-3mpg on the different test cycles to the 80ps version, so it's not much different to mine. I'm doing mostly urban and town driving in the week and my car is returning 55-57mpg all the time now. On a run it easily does 65mpg without trying and over 73mpg with a bit more care. In the colder weather that drops to between 52-53mpg for urban and 65mpg on a run tops. All figure are calculated brim to brim not OBC, although my computer is pretty accurate most of the time.I would add that I am driving around in a fairly flat North Essex most of the time.

Thanks for your replies,I reckon I will get about 400 miles on this tank , however I have many hills here , very steep OK going down great fuel economy , I generally use the 3pot for work so it can get very enthusiastic driving she loves going around 70 mph on the back roads , that might be the issue to much lead in ones right foot , plus the K&N is now fitted so just wants to fly,so I should see around 450-500on a tank full of summer derv

Hi Seb,

Hope your doing well fella.

I've just got back from a 411 mile trip to and from Yorkshire yesterday and done another 10 miles today and my average MPG at the moment is 58MPG.

My speeds were doing an average of 50MPH on the moors roads and 70MPH on the A19, A1 back to Edinburgh with the occasional brisk overtake on the A1, my trip computer says I have about 175m miles left in the tank so I'm looking at around a 500 mile tank now. I've got my father in law over so I've got a wee run out tomorrow to a museum on the outskirts of Edinburgh so that will knock the mileage up and SWMBO is doing a advanced driving lesson with the IAM on Monday night which will involve a hours drive so looking at a 40 mile trip on Monday so should be close to 500 miles on one tank of diesel when the fuel light comes on, once the light comes on I will be refuelling.

Will let you know how I get on with this tank.

While on the subjects of fuel ranges on various engines, my 1.6 TDi CR 105 is doing around 510-520 miles on a tank providing it has a good few runs during a tank. Otherwise I guess it will be around 480ish. Car has now done over 6000 miles.

I have noticed that when its doing 70ish mpg according to the OBC, the engine sounds different. Or am I imagining that?

One tank during the heavy snow last December when it was being run in, was a horrific 375 miles!! :'(

Mate if I got 375 miles out of a tank on my vRS I'd be well chuffed! :giggle:

Thanx for reply's I reckon I will get 450 ish from a tank full so I reckon about 50mpg

The 70bhp version is not as economical as the 80bhp, but I'd still be expecting a bit more from that engine...

I think that's the answer Mike!!

Aye +1 , but recently been draughting, letting roll down hills and generally not using 5th,

5th gear in mine is pointless until you go over 60mph. Its smoother and more efficient using 4th.
