Runnin on veg oil?

Featured Replies

Anyone do this? I'd always though that it was illegal (Excise/fuel duty etc), then I found this My link

Which says you can use upto 2500litres a year.

Interesting? I've never seen anything on here talking about using veg oil. Is it a possibility putting it in my pick up?

One of my customers runs his Land Rover 110 on 80/20 (diesel/recycled). Next time I see him I'll get some more details. Fairly sure that HMRC won't be upset if you stray over the 2500 litres either - they have no way of checking, unless you start selling it ;)

in the old days i used to go down to asda with my mates and buy about 200 bottles of veg oil at a time when it was 35p per litre, but now due to the demand from canny people like me veg oil is actually more expensive to buy than diesel

The fellas who used to use the workshop next to mine both used to run their citreons on veg oil and fill my bloody skip up with their oil containers. They told me it was illegal to use veg oil. (di d it used to be?)

My main question is: can i put veg oil in my fuel tank without any mods needed?

Depends on the engine. I did a fair bit of looking into this a few years ago, and you need to be sure that your engine (make/model) is OK with it. Some are - it tends to be older diesel engines which are far more simple and agricultural - and some aren't. It was a no-go for me with my Focus (my main car), as a number of people reported problems having started running their cars on their own, but there were people with old VWs reporting no problems after years of running them on it. Quite a few say they had starting problems when using WVO or SVO though, a number had a separate tank with diesel in to get it started and running OK and then switched over, IIRC it was also an issue in the cold and additives were needed to keep it flowing OK - I believe one guy switched back to diesel before stopping to avoid the WVO causing issues in the injector pump and pipes if it was cold. Given the price and the fact that it's nigh on impossible to get a regular supply of WVO from anywhere I gave up (I was looking into making a small plant to treat the oil but it just wouldn't have been practical).

Hope this helps.

It didn't used to be illegal to use veg oil but avoiding paying fuel duty was!

If your engine is common rail (eg. Ford engine!) it's a definate no-no!

It will all depend on your fuel pump really and a couple of other things.

What make is the fuel pump in these? I have a feeling it is a Lucas? In which case you are out of luck really. It will handle small mixes of veg oil and diesel but really wouldn't recommend straight veg oil! The Lucas pumps just aren't strong enough!

Oh and about veg oil being more than diesel now... Wrong! I pay 98p a litre from Tesco and Asda! Cheap as chips ;)

I have been using it for over 10,000 miles now including a trip to Germany over christmas. We visited some skiing regions with temps down to -19 and it still started and ran fine with 40 litres veg oil then topped up with diesel (about 20 litres).

i used to run a transit,my pickup and the womans citreon zx on pure veg oil, just change your filters on a regular basis!

netto 89p today, will run best 50/50 with diesel, but was running on fumes christmas eve in wilds of yorkshire- `Crisp n Dry` from a village shop got me home, and funny looks when filling, no probs but was well above Asda price
