Turbo Replaced - Common?

Featured Replies

Hello all, just looking for some information on how long the turbo typically lasts on a Fabia vRS.

I'm currently looking at a 54 plate vRS with 67k miles on the clock which has recently had the turbo replaced, is this usual for a car of this age and mileage? Does it suggest anything about how the car has been driven? I've tried looking on the internet for answers but there seems to be conflicting answers, some saying that the car will have been thrashed and some saying it happens when not using the full rev range. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

People have driven the cars hard and have had 150k+ some have not been driven hard and had 2 replaced under warranty. Its luck of the draw mate. If its had a new one, then that's a bonus.

I was told by a tuner on here that the PD130 will last longer if its had a bit of a thrash. As long as its warmed up and cooled down properly that is.

Yes I say you have it about right, give it some work to do but also take it easy until warmed up and take it easy when coming to a stop, either a bit of slowish driving or allowing the car to tickover before stopping the car. The worst thing you can do for a turbo is turn the car off immediately after working it hard as the heat will fry the oil in it and it will be spinning at high speed without lubrication. Remember these are under quite a bit of strain and can spin at over 200,000 rpm at full boost.

hi mate, ermmm there ain't much on the internet about this sort of stuff and everything sort of contradicts itself. An example of this is my pal recently bought a 1.6 hdi from a very careful old family done about 50k and was a minter.. had it a month and blew the turbo up. the couple that owned the car had obviously never had the turbo spooling up hard so when it come to my friend driving through the revs it went pop. When he changed it all the pipes were clogged with **** and it had obviously suffered oil starvation.

At the end of the day engines and their components have been designed to run under their operating conditions.. if it couldn't handle being thraped it wouldn't have been fitted to the car, but this is only the case if the car has been serviced and warmed up/cooled correctly :)

Thanks for the replies.

Are there any other knock on effects from replacing the turbo, or are any other parts likely to need replacing?

As you can probably tell I'm no expert on this.
