Fabia vRS Remap

Featured Replies

Good evening all,

Apologies in advance as I'm sure these questions have already been answered in previous posts.

I've recently bought a second hand Fabia vRS and new to the Skoda world, so I was hoping you could help me.

I'm looking to get a remap for the Fabia. It's a 2004 plate and done 69000 miles. It's been serviced regularly with Skoda from new.

Here are the questions:

1. Where is the best place to get this done?

2. How much are these remaps?

3. Do they damage the car?

4. What benefits would I gain from this i.e. increased mpg, more torque + bhp, better 0-60mph etc?

I live in the Lancashire area of the UK, so any if you know of any places local, that would be of benefit.

I look forward to your responses.

Cheers,

Well I'm finally getting mine remapped in two weeks by Awesome GTI.

Hopefully should give the vRS some extra poke!

Before you take the plunge, take a look at Shark Performance. Ben is a seriously top bloke who knows his stuff, and will not give you the hard sell

I was going to go to Awesome to get mine Revo'd, but opted for Shark Performance instead, just waiting for the modified map (just taking longer to get the email due to the bank holiday)

Hiya mate,

Thanks for your response - apologies I didn't get to this in time.

I've had the remap done today at Awesome GTI and got to say it is AWESOME!!

I requested a dyno run after the remap and it produced 171bhp with 355lbs of torgue! I'm well chuffed with this remap.

I drove it back home and was smilling all the way. I'll just have to take it easy though as I'll defeat the object of having a diesel car.

Anyway thanks again for your response.

Cheers

That is a huge torque figure! Hmmmm don't be too disappointed if you didn't get those kind of gains. Most likely 165bhp and ~300 lbft...

But, you're happy that's what counts!! It transforms the drivability doesn't it? Makes it drive far more like a petrol...

That Is a massive amount of torque. Either their dyno is way way out, or their map is mentally agressive and your clutch and turbo will last 5 minutes.

I do have the figures from a dyno print out, so these figures are obviously true!

The only thing I will say is the turbo boost must be on its way out, as it makes a funny sucking noise when you really work the gas pedal and I get a large amount of black smoke behind me. I never had this issue when it was standard. However, it was producing a little black smoke and know that diesels generally produce black smoke.

I'm having the car checked over at the weekend as Awesome have said I can get a refund within two weeks if not happy.

What's your thoughts guys?

Just because that's what it says on their printout doesn't mean to say it's necessarily true. A dyno is only an educated guess at best, as it measures the bhp at the wheels, then has to let the car run down to measure the amount of resistance in the transmission. Complex calculations are then made to work back to the flywheel power from the two figures.

Large amounts of black smoke are not normal unless - you have a boost leak somewhere, or the map is massively over fuelling. Awesome now use Revo, who although are one of the companies that make the more style agressive maps, it shouldn't really be chucking out great plumes of black smoke.

The funny sucking noise sounds like a boost leak, as that's exactly what was wrong with my car when I bought it.

It's pressurised air from the turbo escaping from usually a loose connector or split in one of the boost pipes, which is why you can hear it hissing away. The standard connectors are crap and wear over time, resulting in them not sealing properly giving you a leak, or popping off entirely leaving you in limp mode usually.

So how can I actually find out what figures the car is producing i.e. bhp & lbs? Could Awesome be telling me fibs then? If so, where do I stand in getting a refund and this remap removed as I'm not prepared to waste money.

Excuse my ignorance but what is Revo? I apologise as I'm new to the Skoda world. I've seen Revo appear in various places in this forum.

Regarding the sucking noise, has it started occuring because of the remap then? Too much power possibly?!?

So should I not have used Awesome for my upgrade and if so, where is best?

Cheers

The only way to know 100% is to have the engine out of the car, but since that's pretty impractical, a couple of runs on different dynos and comparing the figures is the best way. If the figures come out pretty much the same, then great, otherwise you know something isnt right at one of the places.

Revo are the company that actually produce the maps. Awesome are simply a "retailer" for Revo.

It could be because of the map. The map will be producing extra boost, which might have simply highlighted the exisiting fault a lot more clearly.

There is no "best" as such, it all depends on what you want.

I went to Shark Performance as I know Ben personally from meets etc, and I know his maps are very smooth in their power delivery, and he is a seriouslly top bloke when it comes to customer service. One of the big things I did before taking the plunge was a lot of research in reading reviews of other peoples experiences of other companies, what they are like to deal with, what after care is like if something went wrong, what the car is like to drive etc etc.

If you're happy with how the car now drives, then that's all that matters at the end of the day.

Excellent advice - I'll get a few dyno's done.

I'll be honest with you, I was well chuffed with the remap as it does feel a lot smoother and seems to have removed the turbo lag. The torque is unbelievable!! It pins you to the seat when giving it some stick.

As mentioned earlier, my only concern is the black smoke. I'm just praying it isn't too costly to sort. Also, if there is an issue that needs sorting on the turbo, could it go again within a short period of time due to having such a powerful remap?

Get it checked out by a garage for boost leaks or faulty sensors etc if you're unsure what you're looking at.

Black smoke is unburnt diesel, if the oil seals on the turbo had gone then there'd be blue smoke.

No problem, that's what Briskoda is all about B)

My Fabia had an Awesome map on it 170bhp/330ft.lb and my turbo shat itself :(

I'm now having my remap removed on Friday as I'm unhappy with the black smoke when I boot it in 4th, 5th and 6th gear on the motorway. I've got to say it's rather embarrassing.

I have noticed that when driving sensibly, the fuel consumption has decreased by about 5-10mpg. It defeats the object of me getting a diesel. I would've stuck with my Mountune Fiesta ST otherwise.

Also, it's burning oil for fun. I'm getting 400-500 miles to half a litre of oil. Not impressed in the slightest!!

Time to switch back to a normal ECU. :'(

Give Shark Performance a try

The black smoke isn't oil, so removing the remap won't fix that. It's probably worth getting the engine checked out before they remove the remap.

Well, I've been to Awesome GTI this afternoon and they found the cause of the black smoke! It was the remap they used. They've put another remap on the car which is a lot cleaner. I've test drove it and it's miles better. It's actually how a normal diesel should be now.

Apparently they said the previous person who used to do the remaps has now left the company and said he used really aggressive remaps, hence the black smoke.

I feel a lot happier now. The only thing I need to monitor now is the oil consumption.

Thank you all for your advice and suggestions.

Thats a crazy amount of torque to be running

Our stage 1 is £265.00 including dyno runs and offers approx 170hp and 295lbs/ft torque. Anyone having a map carried out with us between May 18th and June 30th will also be in with the chance to win a pair of tickets to the 2011 British Grand Prix
