Oil service indicator on

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I had my 2003 Fabia vRS serviced in January, last month the Service indicator light started flashing on engine start so I returned it to the garage (independent German car specialist) who reset the Service indicator using the trip reset button and some witchcraft. I wish I watched what he did now....

Anyway, the Oil service indicator (with little spanner icon) is now flashing when I start up the car. So, is this just because it's been XX of time/miles between the fixed service and it wasn't reset properly (like the service indicator), Or is it indicative that there's a potential problem with the oil/filter etc?

I'm confident that the work was carried out by the garage as they're reputable and I've got no reason to doubt them as they look after this car and my Octavia.

So, if it's a case of just resetting the indicator - how do I do it, please???

Thanks in advance!

i just looked in my service book and it said

switch off the ignition, press the reset button of the trip counter for distance driven and hold it down.

switching the ignition on causes a service interval to appear in the display. holding the reset button down for 10 seconds will cause the counter to reset(the display shows ---- and then trip computer readout) then switch off ignition and release trip counter. then switch ignition back on and should be cleared

Cheers mate, was that in the user manual? Do you know if the service/oil indicator lights are independent of each other? The reason I ask is so I know whether or not the light is on for a reason (underlying fault) or, if it's just something the garage failed to do. The same as them not resetting the service indicator initially.

Cheers

yeah out of user manual mate, just check the oil level. i did on mine and it was ok, followed user manual and all ok. i think its set when the car is new

Cheers! Just rechecked the oil level and done the reset.

Funny you should post about this, as my car has never ever come up with an icon to say it needs a service. Then at 4am this morning, just as I was going to work, it came up! Thought I had oil issues to start with, but then I realised what the spanner was for

It must have a mind of its own though. Does anyone know how long before a service is due that it lights up? Or is it bang on 10k, which triggers it to flash?

The service indicator light came on at the 12 month anniversary of it's last service IIRC. So I'm not sure why the oil light was a month behind!?!?!

My OIL and INSP warning lights are turbo random, especially the INSP indicator, I had the big INSP service done 4 months ago and the INSP light is back on, I've probably done about 4k miles since and before this, the oil was changed 3 times in the space of 2 months (for various reasons). V random, I just keep turning them off and get it serviced at the correct intervals.

Thanks for a useful post; our handbook suggested turning the reset button to the right after switching on the ignition but this did not work. Holding down for a while did however :)
