Touch up paint

Featured Replies

Does anybody have any recommendations regarding touch up paint? I have used a Hycote and a Halfords and they are both way off being a colour match for my car. Is the genuine Skoda touch up any better? I have always used Halfords in the past because I like the nib they have. It gives better control than a brush and to be honest the match has always been spot on. Usually I find if there is any mismatch the touch up tends to look slightly lighter but both of these touch ups look identical but several shades darker than the car. I assume my car is candy white but am beginning to wonder :wonder:

Hi Mate - i have the genuine Skoda touch up pen for my Race Blue vRS.

Very impressed with it - best match of touch up pen i've ever bought.

The applicator isnt the best - but i find that with fine stone chips

using a fine pin is ideal to drop the paint in the chip and spread evenly.

Needs a steady hand and patience to do a few coats and then polish up.

Skoda paint perfect comes in 2 pack , 1 paint and 1 varnish or laquer , I use a toothpick to apply the brush you get is like a liquid paper brush and has a metal end for prep, but using tooth pick or similar is better

Hi Fatbloke, that's the same from me too. The Skoda touch up paint is the best for match and quality I've found. The tips the blokes have listed are very good too.

Do you guys sand down the area after touchup?

Mine has quite a few stone chips already and I have the touch up pen already, just a bit scared of diving in with it!

I don't think sanding is a good idea, that would probably be best for when spraying the area. In this case just clean the area thoroughly and then apply the paint with a little brush as the brush of the applicator is too big. Then after it dries well, apply the varnish. I use a blow-dryer at a very low setting to help it dry quickly and no debris or dust gets stuck to the area.

+ 1 best do it properly

I find a little 'T cut' over the affected area after the paint has hardened blends it in quite well. I had mine Supaguarded when new and must say the paint has stayed remarkably good, no swirls and no stone chips apart from one at the front end. I gave it the full treatment with 'T cut' afterwards. Can't see where it was now. I find too, that if you put the touch up stick in your pocket for half an hour before hand to make sure the paint is warm it makes a big difference to the flow and it blends in much better.

Thanks for your replies. I have ordered a genuine touch up now. It is so frustrating having done what would have been an invisible repair if it was the right colour! My technique is to build up the paint until it is slightly proud of the surface. I then shave it back with a sharp knife or scalpel then finish it with rubbing paste, then T-cut, then polish.

vRS's will pick up alot of chips due to their elevated performance and their rather upright stance, only way to avoid them will be to drive carefully and not drive too close to the car in front.

Sounds like you have a really good technique of your own!

Which rubbing compound does everyone use?

I was thinking something like Meg's Swirl X.

Thanks for the replies too.

Megs Scratch X works well :)

T-Cut's scratch remover (the water based paste in a tube rather than the traditional solvent based bottle)) is very effective

For the life of me I can't find the Rallye Green touch up pen. Tried HERE but no joy :S

Picked up a genuine candy white from the local VW dealer (no Skoda dealer nearby) - perfect match. Took the halfords paint paint back and got a refund
