Genuine plea for help ...

Featured Replies

I always like a cunning plan, doesn't everyone?

To be honest the spray masks the problem and is not really the answer. It may help but do you really want to spend the rest of your life spraying a car floor mat or seat? If people want to ignore our advice about clothing then how about changing their car mats? Do their feet shuffle on acrylic mats? Get a bit of pure wool carpet and try that for a bit, it is a process of elimination.

We only supply the spray in industrial quantities but there are companies out there that supply it in 1 litre bottles or smaller, and that could be worth a try for those who want to. Google it, or a company I know that does supply it are www.bondline.co.uk Look under sprays, Killstat is the brand name. This is not my company, I have no links to them and if a moderator is not happy with this post then feel free to delete it. I am just trying to help.

Could try rubber mats on the inside and following on logicically seat covers, just came to me reading this, sort of a eureka moment.

I get this too. I tend to wear cotton most of the time, so it's not man-made fibres. The strange thing is my wife (who does wear some man-made fibres) doesn't get it.

I can actually see the spark jump when I close the door. I've had this with other cars as well in the past. Never found a solution.

Oh, by the way, it happened all through the winter too, so it's not the dry weather.

Static gets worse in dry conditions but it is not restricted to summer. Warm and dry is the key and that works in summer or winter, don't underestimate the drying power of your car heater.

Jock - you will probably find that although your wife wears man made fibres she is not a seat shuffler. It could be your feet slide around on the car floor without you thinking about it or you may shuffle on the car seat. Subconscious shuffling! Your wife however may sit perfectly still in the seat and just leaves her feet on the pedals. Static is caused by friction, you are creating it, your wife does not.

Incidentally, when I was about 20 I got horrible shocks, sparks and everything, from my mums car one summer so I am aware how unpleasant this is. Unfortunately it is a long time since I was 20 so I can't remember why they stopped.

Don't you find it gobsmacking that when an explanation is offered, and links to websites demonstrating the science are provided, that people will still argue (on the basis of no rational thought) "that can't be right". Same kind of numpties who take homeopathic medicine I guess. (Ducks and runs for cover  )

Yup. Am also ducking :giggle:

We sell an Anti Static floor paint and every so often someone will ring up and ask if they can use it on walls and ceilings. "Will anyone be walking up the walls and along the ceiling" is my reply. "Errrr no" is the reply. I then explain why they then will not need to paint the walls and ceilings ( I wont bore you with the long version but a surface does not generate static, movement does. You don't walk up a wall so static is not created from it. Have the floor done and that covers the basics) but at least a third will still continue to buy the paint and use it there. People are stubborn in their ideas. Anyone for ground tigers tail to reduce hair loss?

Now here's a funny thing. Just popped down to the shops in Betty, and as I stepped out and closed the door got a little quick tingle. Nothing like as powerful as some on here have indicated, but a static shock nonetheless (my first ever in this car). Quick look at the clothing - a pair of Adidas training bottoms - polyester - and training shoes, not my normal attire. Coincidence? I think not!

You'd better seek out a homeopathic remedy quickly!

This isn't a cure, but if you are worried about static shocks, make a fist and discharge the spark through your knuckles to the car. The reason being your knuckles don't feel pain anywhere near as sensitively as your finger tips. It is the exact opposite of the childhood prank of charging yourself up and firing off a belt to a friends ear lobe (by eck that makes you jump). Try it it works well and served me for years at work. :) I mean the knuckle thing, not the shock your friends in the ear lobe thing :D

Thanks Lady Elanore - now I'm getting over my fear of getting out of my SM!

As I'm often accused of dragging my knuckles along the ground, I'm glad I've found another use for them!

Now to invite some friends to view the SM ... just as I'm getting out of course! :-)

And to you Sparky!

So far we have only smart ass replies ... I dont wear nylon shirts, my shoes are leather soled and therefore have a high resistance ...

There must be someone out there with something sensible to write or is this not a helpful owners forum that I was led to beleive?

Edited after the sense of the last post hit my few remaining unshocked grey cells ... shame the door releases arent metal ... and I wonder why the last 3 skodas I have had didnt cause this phenomenon?

My response wasn't "smart ass", it was based on scientific principle and it will work if you try it.
