gears and speed

Featured Replies

hi guys,

well getting closer to collecting the new car. only 2 more sleeps. feels like christmas come early :)

anyway, my last 4 cars have all been automatic and the new vrs tsi i have coming is a manual.

so my question is and this may sound daft but i have driven manuals where you cant put it into 5th gear at 30mph.

anyway what speeds and gears should i run the car at?

i.e. can you drive the car at 30mph in 5th gear? when should you go into 6th etc?

i know this sounds daft but as mentioned my last cars have all been auto's so just want to know what the vrs should run at.

thanks guys

Just keep the revs above about 1500. For constant speed driving you won't go far wrong with:

30 - 4th

40 - 5th

50+ - 6th

thanks mate just wanted to check if it would do 30 in 5th or not.

that is great.

cheers

it'll do 25 easily in 6th if you want, but you try that and stick your foot down it'll demolish the the clutch

Do not forget to take into account the gradient you are on....up or down......30 in 6th down or 2nd up at 30....adjust gearing to the situation.

How many times do you follow someone at a steady speed until they come to a hill and they try and go up it until their car comes to a near stop before they decide to change down a cog or two causing everyone else to apply the anchors and then a tail back suddenly happens.

The TSI EA888 engines are magical. What most people do not realise is that the TSI petrols are much more flexible than even the diesels.

The longer stroke version in the TSI, ie the VRS, is very capable at running at 1500 rpm and the gear indicator will tell you that is OK but as someone said it does not take note of slopes which is something the DSG does as it has an inclinometer as part of its sensor array.

The TSI EA888 2 litre version reaches peak torque 100 rpm lower than the TFSI ie 1700 against 1800. If anything the fells like it could quite happily pull slightly higher gearing and revs to 6500 rpm very cleanly in all but 6th. 6th is about 25 mph/1000 on GPS.

The 1.8 TSI is even more flexible with peak torque at 1500 rpm and revs out at 7000 rprm. Gearing with 7 speed DSG is 29 mph per 1000 in 7th gear. Max power is at 4500 rpm ie 2500 shorly of redline!

It is these reasons that the TSI vrs/1.8s get to 60 in 7 seconds flat and the 1.8TSI in 7.5s to 60 and 18 and 20 seconds standing kilometer respectively!

If I could easily change the gearing on the VRS, like you can on motorbikes, I would be tempted to tweak it slight. I expect Skoda might do it to get the VRS even lower CO2 and even better fuel consumption.

thanks guys just wanted to check as been a while since driving a manual and wanted to see what you guys think.

i will adjust accordingly obviously but was good to know what sort of gears/speed it does for everyday driving.

cheers

Hankey just try not to labour it too much as its a new car!

thanks daz_pd

The gear indicator on the vRS TSI isn't too bad at suggesting which gear to use, but as above I tend to use 4th at 30mph on a level road, 5th at 40, 6th at 50+, but obviously that changes with gradient and whether or not I want to put my foot down. I've tried using the suggested gear in various scenarios, and it's never felt like it's stuggling, even in the suggested gear on a steep hill.

thanks for the help guys.

You can, you can put higher profile tyres on or larger wheels but there may be other unwanted side effects though like maybe tyres wearing against the bodywork and the car looking a bit funny.

I actual want to go the other way ie use smaller circumference tyres ie 225/35 - 17 (instead of 225/45) to drop the ride height by about and inch as the change in gearing would have little effect on the car's performance as it is so tall geared ie 29 mph/1000 revs in 7th ie 145 mph at 5000 rpm, 203 mph at 7000 rpm in top (if it could pull it) ie 7th is a well tall gear effectively but then max power is at 4500 rpm. Massive 7% change in gearing but probably make the speedo more accurate comapred to GPS.

Wonder if there is any other options? May just buy some Neptune 18s as they look good on SWMBOs VRS.

TFSI is quite happy at 30mph when the engine is warm and you're on the flat or going downhill. Good for getting the average mpg up.

As said just don't labour the engine. You shouldn't really be thinking about exactly what speed for which gear, road conditions, gradients and even temperature will vary all that.
