Please Help - Intermittent Starter Problem

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I hope somebody here can help. My Octy II 2.0TDi (45,000 miles) has an intermittent starter problem.

Sometimes it starts absolutely fine, very quick to fire up, other times you turn the key to position II, all the lights and fans come on, the glow plug light goes out, immobiliser light goes out, all looks normal, but when you turn the key to position III, you get absolutely nothing, no noises from under the bonnet, no dimming lights, nothing.

We have 2 keys, the same thing happens with both. No errors logged in VAG-COM.

We've had the starter motor replaced by a local specialist (Pioneer Service Centre, Cheltenham) but still the symptoms persist. We then left the car with them for almost a week and not once did it fail to start for them so they couldn't check anything. We picked it up, drove it a couple of miles to Tescos, filled up with diesel, went to start it and nothing. Push starting it got it going as it always does. We drove to Surrey and left it over night. The next day it started fine we drove about 10 miles, parked up for a few hours, went to start and nothing. Push starting did the trick again.

This first happened last spring/summer. Failed to start on first attempt a few times, but second attempt got it going. It was absolutely fine over the winter - always started first time.

It's now started doing it more frequently over the last few weeks but it only seems to happen with the outside temperature is warm???

This is a bit of an issue as the wife is a nanny so needs a reliable car when she's responsible for several children.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Many thanks,

Matt.
