Shock absorber cover broken away. replace ?

Featured Replies

Fabia VRS 2005. 70K miles. Standard suspension setup.

The rear shock absorber plastic covers have broken free and slid down the piston shaft. I cant see a way of reattaching them so I guess its time for new shocks (they are the original ones anyway)and I guess its a MOT fail too.

Do you recommend any particular type/make for the rears or should I just stick with the standard ones from the dealer ?

The rear bump stops have split, not an MOT fail. Worth sorting though as they are less than a tenner each.

Both sides on mine have dropped. Passed the m.o.t though but did tell me about them.

Any one got the part number??

That is good news - i'll look into replacing the bump stops and not replace the shockers just yet.

As it happens , I was quoted £55 for each rear shock absorber by Mega-Spares today . Is that the going rate? Seems alot to me.

Main Skoda dealer couldnt get any till end of next week.

If they're OK, don't change them - 70K is nothing if used mostly on roads and for that money you can get two winter tyres for next year. When you replace the bump stops (easy job)you might find that the covers are broken at the top. Don't panic, they are for protection from dirt and aren't precision pieces; I made one up from an old grease tube three years ago and it's been fine. No problem with MOT.

Curious that you just happened to mention "winter tyres" there, I replaced both bump stops (VW parts man called them "salts and peppers" for obvious reason), on my wifes Polo last year after spotting a shiny part in the wheel arch, last weekend when I replaced the winter wheels and tyres for the summer ones, I spotted a wettish rear shock absorber - so that will be the next job I suppose.

I would guess that part or most of the very reason that these bump stops fail is due to the way that the "pipe protector" grips or bites into the bump stop.
