170 DSG Tyre wear

Featured Replies

Cleaning the car yesterday found front tyres on the limit after only 15500miles what sort of wear are others getting, or is it due to the factory fit Continenals being very soft? It is not due to the geometry as the tyres are worn evenly.

Anyone have experience of differing make of tyre as I think that sort of milage is very poor, even my 3ltr TDI SAAB could manage 25-30K on a set of fronts

15,000 is good mileage - some members are reporting needing tyres in 10,000 miles...! i know my 4x4 170's tyres have only done around 9000 miles, and they are at around 3mm... unfortunately, they are ALL around 3mm! I'm expecting them to last around 4 or so thousand miles - I have bought (and taken delivery of) 4x Toyo Proxes C1S for my next set of tyres. They will go on sometime in the next few months..

The car has done almost 14,000 but over the winter, i used Vredestine Wintrac's.

I am now on 2nd set of tyres at 44k, mostly motorway driving - 170 CR in manual

My first set of Continental sportcontact2's lasted 10000 miles but the grip was so good that I treated my car to a new set of sportcontact 3's . Fronts were nearly down to the wear bar although back ones were not too bad so I took them home cause they fit my son's Golf (poor student!!)

15.5k from a set of front tyres? I should be so lucky!

I think you have done well for Conti's. My car is at nearly 21k and getting near to the second set of fronts. Rears are pretty close too now.

I've heard 10,000 miles is quite common for the Superb... must be a heavy front end with the diesel engine.

Not had this sort of wear rate before, my SAAB had a 3ltr V6 diesel up front with 178BHP and loads more torque and the X Type had the 2.2 diesel so that would be about the same in torque and wieght, must just be the Conti's then will look around for different make of tyre

Hi Kensym,

I agree with you, I've commented before on a previous thread but the indications are that tyre wear on the Superb seems to me to be incredibly high! I also feel that ~30k miles should be the norm for the front (got that from my 1.9TDI 150ps Vectra estate before) but it seems that if you get 20k miles you've done incredibly well with the Superb!

If you look back I'm sure you'll find other threads... not sure how best to sort/search for it though.

Fot info. quite a few appear to have had wheel alignments done & its improved things - but I can't tell you why & if the wear was uneven... memory is failing more very day :-(

My Contis lasted 20k on my diesel Octy vRS.

Mine lasted 8000 miles down to the wear bar.. backs were fine.

Now have contact 3's also..

Tyre man was not surprised for a car of the size/weight and the roads in such a poor state.

Just Had 2 new front tyres fitted and gone for Bridgestones this time not cheap but what is now.

Will see how these last, tyreman did say that Conti's do have a high wear rate as they are so soft, time (&milage) will tell

My PD140 Contis did 18K before needing replacement, new chepo tyres have now done 14K miles and are wearing much better then the Contis. One thing i did do when I got my car is have a pro 4WA carried out on the car by Wheels in Motion (Chesham, Bucks) because I did not like the way it was driving, even from the factory the wheel alignment was out.
