How long should wipers last?

Featured Replies

I know its potentially an open ended question, but would anyone else think 3 years from new (for Bosch aerotwins!) is a bit quick for wipers to get in need of replacement? Maybe a couple of cold winters, etc, have taken their toll. I'm having to look around now and it wasn't that long ago I fitted the current pair....

Being of the old school I always change at 12 months maximum, or if the finish is going off earlier , I would never dream of keeping for 3 years. With all the diesel c**p pumped out by lorries whose exhausts are designed to cover cars and people I am surprised wipers have lasted 3 years.

Every year is recommended.

.....my wipers are nearly a year old and still going strong.... :)

Until you feel the level of smearing is unacceptable. Bosch say their blades should last about 900 hours of wiper run time. Ok, it's a bit apples and oranges, but I typically run 200 to 300 hours engine run time a year, use the wipers maybe half of that, which would suggest 4 years at 10_000 miles a year.

Well, in rain my wipers actually do very little due to the aquapel coating. At speed I just don't bother / need to wipe.

Think I might have been a bit over-zealous with my "3 years ain't enough" thinking.... :D

i replace mine every year

I bought some, lasted about a year (not a big brand). I'd be chuffed to get 3 years out of a set

I had aerotwins on my Clio for 2 years and they looked like new when I sold the car.

The first day I picked up my VRS I went to Halfords and bought some, great buy imo.

Annual replacement for me.

I changed 6 months after they came with the car, they started jumping after a few hours on a very heavy rain the right one got ruined. Replaced with same Bosch Aerotwin and they are no good. Even new always leaving marks on the windscreen.

Is there any better brand than these? Valeo?

I had some Trico aero wipers on my Nissan and they were really good!

I have Bosch aerotwins on my Octavia atm and they're pretty good!

Many coatings will drastically shorten the blades life.

I generally change them every 3 years, unless they loose their performance then I change them when required.

I change mine after annually, and the difference is dramatic. You may not notice your old ones deteriorating until you put new ones on.

i put new Bosch aero ones on at Christmas and already the passenger one is starting to streak and smear.

think the blade might jsut need a wipe down though

As and when required

I've had wipers last 3yrs+, and some < 1 week

There was a documentary all about wiper technology on quest the other day, bit nerdy I guess, but was quite interesting seeing how they use laser 3D modelling to get the shape of the windscreen ....
