Replaceing Rad Fan on vRS?

Featured Replies

Ok i have managed to source a single rad fan for my car as the bigger one is dead.

I am wondering what the best way is to get the frame that the fan sits in off from the car. I had a look at the 3 torx bolts i think it is the look pretty rotten. I soaked them with wd40 over night but the still look pretty crap.

Whats the best way to get them off? Drill them?

Right i can't get the bloody screws out. So looks like i am going to have to remove the whole fan plastic assembly that both fans are attatched to.

I am just wondering if its possible to remove this whole assembley out from the car? It looks quite tight i don't know if it possible without removing a few other bits if anyone has an idea that would be great.

Regards

Just had a look, and there isn't much space is there. :dull:. Looks like you will have to remove the top coolant hose, SAI pump pipework, metal plate with n249 etc on it. Might even help if you take the maifold off too.

Mr Haynes thinks you need to remove the radiator and remove it from under the car to change the fan though. :o

it just looks like a bloody nightmare lol.

My next option was to maybe use a irwin bolt remover on the rotten nuts and try remove the frame that the fan sits in. But as you say there is no bloody room to do anything.

Well after alot of swearing and cut fingers grazed knuckles i just managed to get the old fan out. What an absoulte nightmare it was. I wasn't to keen on taking the slam pannel bumper off etc to get the fan out. But i manged in the end to get it out and put the new one in.

So i have two working fans now :) , am i correct in saying that when the econ button is selected the 2 fans stop spinning, and while the auto button is selected the 2 fans will spin? I think there right just want to make sure.

Yep, that's right. They spin at the same time.

Did you get the individual fan out, or take out the whole frame?

Just the individual fan i managed to get out. I managed to undo the top two torx screws that hold the frame in place i then managed to pull it up carefully but it aint easy there aint much room at all. The screws were an absoulte pig but they eventually came out with a bit of persuassion. Hopefully ill never have to do it again lol.

Happy though as they both work now :-),

wow, pics and instructions would be nice how you did it. Mine has squeaky bearings(sometimes) and probably have to change it soon(or not if it's going to be PITA)... :smirk: .

edit: did you have to disassemble any hoses or what?

I took the battery out for easier access and also removed the hose that goes to the airbox apart from that nothing else. The top rad hose gets in the way a bit but if your carefull it will come up past.

The hardest part is getting the bloody screws out i did cause a small part of damage to the frame but iam not bothered its all back together and the fan now works.

I had a squeaking fan, (left hand one as if sat in drivers seat) found it easier to take out from underneath the car, i just squirted some grease into the motor housing,( there are 3 holes in the housing) cured the squeaking and have had no problems since, did this over 12months ago. Be advisable to cure the squeak sooner rather than later.
