Steering wheel control module coding

Featured Replies

Folks, we've just fitted a revision P CAN gateway to my Dec 04 Octavia Elegance, along with 1K0 953 549 AG steering wheel control module to allow the newly installed MFSW to work.

Now, the buttons etc all work 100%, but we cannot get the steering wheel angle calibration done. We've followed the steps in the procedure, to no avail.

When we go in to group 060 and select "go/next", it just comes up "adaption not possible".

Anyone any ideas?

Check the steering angle in the abs measuring blocks. If you've had the steering wheel off, remove the top cowling and make sure the wires are connected to re slip ring correctly.

We put the original module back in and the steering calibration procedure worked first time.

I'm wondering was the new module the wrong one? But it was a highline for trip, cruise and MFSW.

i take it you could see the pins on the controller to accept the G85?

What was the part number of your old one?

Which pins are those? I did have a couple of concerns- theres an L shaped connector on the bottom corner that wasn't identical on the 2 units.

The old was an A (midline) and the new an AG.

What slip ring did you use?

Ah, that was the other thing. The A appears to be slip ring type 1, and the AG type 2. I didn't change it to type 2.

Is this the problem? Would it still allow the buttons to function like we achieved, bit just not cure the steering angle calibration?

Also, what does LIN version 1,3 mean?

If you look at the front of a steering control module, there's an L shape connection on the bottom right.

The A unit had a connection that actually filled that, whereas the AG only has the bottom of the "L" shape filled with a connection point. Does that make sense!? I'm not at my computer so can't take a photo to explain.

I don't think it matters, as the sensor is behind the slip ring and is connected to the controller.

When you tried the basic settings was it in the ABS (03) or steering assist (44)

Also I find that once you activate the basic settings once done. Switch the engine off and restart it turn left, right and back left again. check the control units for faults and clear them

It wouldn't let us activate the settings though, just said not completed when we clicked ok/next.

Did you lose the power steering? when you were in the process of doing the basic settings

We never had power steering since fitting the new module.

did you do the basic settings in ABS or steering 44

Spoke to the other chap that did the coding. He said the abs module had nothing in it. The steering one said not possible.

was the G85 behind the slip ring?

when you changed the gateway, was the G85 ticked?

when the slip ring was put back was it in the correct position?

Also was the battery voltage correct?

  • Author

Not sure about the answers, but I'll find out and get back to you!

I don't think the slip ring was removed, but again I'm probably wrong.

We changed the gateway first, then the steering module. After being unable to get the angle calibration working, we put the original module back in and the calibration worked perfectly. As both were done after the new gateway was fitted, I imagine the G85 was checked as it worked with the old module re-fitted.

The G85 wasn't removed. The slip ring was only removed when the new module wasn't working, but was put back on correctly.

The car started, does that mean the voltage was ok?

Can you post up a picture of the new control module looking down so I can see the pins

So far it's a nice guessing game, what about posting a diagnostic protocol/auto-scan from the car so that everybody can actually see what is installed and what the status of the components is?

How are you getting on with your list

I see the CB and BS control modules are still listed as supporting G85 behind the slip ring

And CB is listed as a midline even though I tried 2 in my car and they both worked with MFSW

In this photo, my original module has 2 rows of pins where this just has 1.

Index BS/CB are not confirmed at the moment, I have another case where CB does NOT support the installed MFSW. So for now I am waiting for at least a 2nd confirmation before changing things. :) It is possible though that there are different HW/SW versions out there which could explain things.
