Removing the Rear Spoiler

Featured Replies

I'm giving serious thought to removing the rear spoiler.. the paints REALLY lost it now.. Not only faded but flaking away day by day...

I'm not a huge fan of roof spoilers as it is.. I like the dumpy big bumpers no spoiler look. Just seems a bit cleaner?

Anyway.. Is it possible to remove the spoiler and get away with GOOD paint left behind? What would be the best approach? Yank it, gingerly cut the bonding?

I guess the biggest question is will the bonding / sealant come off the paint once the spoiler is off, or is it like Tiger Seal?

Hey, I've just realised something...

I once heard that to replace the rear window on a Fabia it's sometimes actually required to fit a whole new hatch? That might be wrong.

I find small bit's of glass all the time in the boot. I'm 100% convinced it's had a rear window at some point. I suspect the original owner had some ICE stolen.

But It's just dawned on me that it could also have had a replacement spoiler? Which could explain why the paint is failing so badly... Seriously, I only have maybe 50% of the lacquer on it now and it's not showing any signs of stopping until it's all flaked away.

Any chance of taping off area and respray area yourself, or have it professionally done. ??

Isnt the rear spoiler bolted on?

Its glued on I imagine. Could probably get off sawing through the bonding agent with some tough fishing line, but would be surprised if the paint underneath comes off unscathed. You never know though. If the spoiler comes off OK, then the residue should come off with intensive tar remover.

I guess I've got nothing to loose because if it comes off and the paint is salvageable I've won.

If it comes off and the paint is bad I'll just get the spoiler re-painted and re attached!

My mates is as bad as your sounds too! Strange how his is a year newer and awful and mine is a year older and perfect still

Matt

Mines gone the same. All the lacquer off the top face of my spoiler has gone. It started to with a bubble, and over the last couple of months it just come off completely. Im thinking of taking it off to be painted, but wasn,t to sure how much damage it would do to the hatch underneath. I will keep an eye on this thread to see how you get on.

Mines going too Rob.... :(

I'm spraying mine (On the car) satin black soon.

If I rub down and mask off properly then I reckon it will

look okay. I've got all the stuff I need saved in my Ebay watch list.

For once I'm glad the car is black, I reckon I can get away with it.

If my attempt is pants then down the bodyshop I'll go..

Bizarre how it worsens daily isn't it. Never seen it happen like this before.

The rear spoiler is glued on. Removal involves cutting through the glue sealing mass using a cutting wire with holder, eg VAG 1351. HTH.

Or some fishing line

or a heatgun and a bit of gentle tugging when mine needed to come off :)

or a hammer if you're feeling saucey
