Well they put Castrol edge 5-30 in mine. Recommended by Skoda so probably why it says Castrol. Provided the oil meets VW 507 spec any brand would do. Its just that Skoda approve Castrol.

Other brands are 507 compliant but not necessarily Skoda approved.

Edge just happens to be a long life oil and meets 507 spec. The 507 means its compatible with DPF as it is low ash formula. Its also used in petrol engines. A sort of one oil does all. The fact your car is fixed service interval is irrelevant, its a good oil to use regardless.

As long as the oil meets the 507.01 standard then any make of oil will do. 507.01 is mandatory for cars fitted with a DPF and filling with any other oil will lead to premature failure of the DPF.

Well when my crtdi is due it'll be the Castrol rather than the stuff they use in garage / dealers

Just a bit of advertising for Castrol. Nothing more.

As said, just make sure whatever is used meets the correct VAG standard and you'll be fine.

You may find they use edge anyway. My Skoda dealer does and its way cheaper than buying it from Halfrauds.

They buy it in massive drums.

Edited bit....No I dont work for Castrol !! The important part is the spec, not the brand as mentioned by others

When I bought my Combi in November the service book holder had a nice Skoda recomends Shell Helix label stitched in. The dealer uses Mobil, Castrol was never a favouite oil of mine, we always found it sludged up worse than any oil. Shell was always my personal favourite, BP next, Visco static nice red colour but terrible smell, we had two customers who would use nothing else. I had to strip down one of their engines ( Sunbeam Rapier ) after 100,00 miles, bearing wear was negligable and the pistons were perfect a little brown staining on the skirts and hardly any carbon on the crowns. Considering the fuel used in those days most impressive.

I will ask for Shell especially and if neccessary provide it for them.

Yes, the important bit is the spec not the brand. You are looking for a product that has passed the performance requirements of whichever spec you require.

At present, it would appear that Castrol currently have the factory fill contract with Skoda/VW and it seems from another post in this thread that previously this honour was held by Shell.

With regard to dealer fill, yes check what they are using and how the oil is stored. Does it come from a drum (normally 205 litres) or smaller or do they have a bulk tank which is periodically filled? if it is from a tank then personally i would supply my own oil as you can not be certain of the quality of the product. I know some will say i am being stupid but then it is my engine.

Finally, the VW standards are tailored for each engine type (specifically petrol and diesel) and longevity. Whilst in this thread you are talking about Diesel engines, then the 507 is perfect. However, an oil that is purely a 507 (is not multi coded to other VW specs such as say 504) is not best suited for gasoline engines.

Annoyingly, i can not find the actual VW specs, if anyone knows where they can be found on the internet i would be grateful for a link.

All the best, Jerry

Mine too came with Shell Helix as factory fill. This changed afterwards to VW Groups Fully Sympathetic Quantum Platinum something or other 5-40 507spec. Cost is easily one of the best at £6.75 per litre in one litre containers for top up and it's about that when the dealer fills her at service too.
