1.2 TSi under bonnet insulation

Featured Replies

Thought I read on here somewhere it was only the diesel Yetis that had the under bonnet insulation as standard, the petrols being naked. Having got the use of a Fabia 1.2 TSi 105 manual for a few days I was somewhat surprised to find the insulation fitted. This is a fairly new car on a 11 plate.

Must add that the engine is a little cracker, quiet, refined and very responsive.

Hi Bassa,

yes that's correct; the Fabia has insulation but the Yeti not. My wife's Fabia TSI 85 built in August 2010 has the blanket on the bonnet also. Right about the TSI fantastic engine even in 85PS format :)

Regards,

TP

Inquired with dealer about retro fitting this item (about £25 including clips).

Easy to fit part , with snap on clips part no 5L0 863 831 including clips (CHECK BEFORE ORDERING).

My idea was better winter insulation (car stands outside) and maybe better sound insulation.

Dealer was dismissive..why would you want to fit it. Would't confirm it wouldn't effect the warranty,

Gave no reasons why it shouldn't be fitted though so in the end didn't bother.

It has been raised before on this forum by me and the response was mixed, some positive and others why bother as it is quiet engine.

Type in 'bonnet insulation' in the search box on this forum for other postings on subject.

Spotted Clip part number 1H5 863 849 A so maybe check if comes with insulation as a set.

Not sure how many needed if they don't. Again check part no's as not my source for part numbers...

appears on other threads.

Also raises that can of worms of notifying insurance company of 'modification' and all the confusion

and potential premium increase potential that could lead to.

I couldn't get a sensible answer from my off shore call centre.. (Will refer it to underwriters ...

didn't want to go there). Common sense no longer applies it seems.

That's one of reasons why I didn't persue.

I fitted some under bonnet insulation to the Wife's 1.2 - the clips are included already attached and fitting it is a 2 minute job.

Didn't even consider it as a modification or any warranty implications. It's a Skoda part and whether it makes any noticable difference I couldn't say, but for £25 if nothing else it makes the underside of the bonnet look 'finished'.

There are some photos on page 2 of this thread;

short sidenote: Roomster (at least elegance spec) also gets the underbonnet insulation with the 1.2 TSI

It appears to be one of those strange Skoda anomalies, fitted as standard to Fabia & Roomster (not sure of the Octavia) but not the Yeti. Surely there must be some logic in that decision somewhere - answers on a postcard please. :o

Personally I wouldn't worry about the insurance company. As so many models/versions come with the sound deadening felt it would be a very desperate insurance company indeed who tried to avoid a claim because of this.

In fact given that the space is already there, it would be more likely for the insurance company challenging it NOT being fitted.

The winter tyre debacle has a lot to answer for. I've put Skoda mud flaps on my Yeti but wouldn't dream of notifying the insurance company.

However, one word of caution I might raise is heat and more specifically, under-bonnet heat on the 1.2 TSI engine. Does it run hot? Could that be why the insulation is not there?

If that's the case, then why is it standard fit on the Fabia & Roomster with, I presume, their smaller engine bays ?

Could be but I'd have thought the Fabia would have been first in line for that route. Wonder if 1.2 TSi Audis & VWs have it as standard fit ?

Ours doesn't run any hotter now that it's been fitted and given the amount of room in the engine bay left by the 1.2. The sound insulation doesn't block any cooling vents or air channels.
