Cheap remap, backbox & servicing questions

Featured Replies

I'm a complete newbie with a 2002 1.8 T 4X4 LPG estate. I'm planning to service and upgrade the car on a limited budget. One of the first things I need is a new backbox as it's just failed the MOT on that. I've seen a cheap remap on Ebay, item 260774016239 (wasn't sure if I could post links?. I've emailed the seller and he say's he can supply one for my car if I send him the original map file? Sounds odd to me? The gearchange is a bit stiff, so I was wondering if this can be lubricated? Also I've read about the maf sensor grease post/pikey mod but can't find if it applies to the 1.8T? Any help would be most welcome.

Thanks 352

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

The map file is from a decent mapper, Jabbasport are a well known mapper. The only problem is, you need to get an ECU flashing tool in order to upload the new map to your car, which are quite expesnive AFAIK, and not that easy to use. It's incredibly easy to brick your ecu and ruin the car.

As for the gearbox, the gearbox has oil in it, but the level is supposed to be checked during a service. A lot of people on here change the gearbox oil every couple of years. Skoda say you don't need to, but it's worth doing anyway.

Finally, you can do the maf grease mod on the 1.8t. I have done it on mine, but it didn't make any difference.

you may find a problem re-mapping it as it's lpg( depending on the system installed) I was looking at getting an lpg with the intention of getting it re-mapped, spoke to a couple of places that do re-maps and they were unsure about it as some systems use a seperate ecu for the lpg injection and timing, just need to do your homework and research it well.

On another note good choice in car by the way(same as mine) just a bit younger

And I too am on a budget :dull:

Lastly, Welcome to the site and I hope you enjoy your car

EDIT: that remap file you found is for the vRS, your engine is not a vRS engine( don't know the actual differences) yours will be 150bhp standard where as the vRSis 180bhp standard. Don't know if the re-maps are the same file(s) for both engines

depends on the engine code as many 1.8t's had a k03s fitted so it would remap to more than the 150bhp k03 engine

I thought that all 4x4's had the k03s turbo, even though they were all 150bhp?

Confused now? Could it be that I could just buy this map, assuming my engine code is correct (how would I find out?), and I'd end up with the same power as a remapped VRS? If so, I'm in! Where would I find the engine code? Is it part of the engine number? Also I take it that I could install this map via my laptop using one of those cheap ECU flashers for £15 ish from Ebay?

Cheers 352

I wouldn't trust the cheap eBay flashers, I've heard a lot bad things about them. the 150bhp engines also had a k03s fitted too

The engine code is to the bottom left of the engine block. Look in between the cambelt cover and the throttle body. It's a 3 letter code, might be AUM.

This table shows what turbo you have:

your engine code will/might be same as mine ARX which has a K03s turbo, if you've got all the paperwork and books it should have it in that lot somewhere. I was told the expected bhp from mine after the remap was about 190-195bhp, although i've been told on here that it should be higher due to the K03s( all I know is it's fun  ) watch out for the O.E brakes though, they are not fantastic under prolongued abuse :giggle:

ah well that depends if the person who mapped your car was award that it had a k03s, otherwise it may well not be mapped for over 200bhp

not too bothered what it is at the min, planning on a proper custom map after I've done some more mods to the engine. Current map was just a generic one till i get round to doing everything i want too, quick enough for now as like i say the brakes are a bit poo when pushed hard

Finally, you can do the maf grease mod on the 1.8t. I have done it on mine, but it didn't make any difference.

Glad you said that, it seemed like a load of old ****** to me :D

I've had a look at the paperwork an it looks like an ARX? Is this good? Can I just buy this map and flash it?

Cheers 352

I wouldnt go anywhere near that! something

tells me its someone who has just read the file from the ecu and will just send it out without using any of the ecu codes from your own map!

at £30, if it sounds too good to be true then it usually is!

I wonder what jabbasport would think about this, as regardless of whether it's proper or not, it is seriously devaluing the product!
