Painting disk hubs

Featured Replies

I want to paint my hubs (unused part of the disks) which are going rusty. I remember a thread on this before and I have bought some smooth silver hammerite to do the job. I was just wondering if anyone there who had done this had any special tips?

I have all the tools I think: jack, axle stands, wire brush and obviously paint, brush and brush cleaner. The hammerite says leave for four hours between coats which makes for a long time without using the car and I was planning on doing the two front wheels first and then the two rear wheels. There might be a quicker way?

I am guessing that if I leave the car in neutral instead of park I will be able to move the front hubs to paint the undersides more easily?

What I have done though is to completely detail the car over the last two days (except the wheels and brakes which I will do at the same time as above). Great to see the paint shine and despite some chips which will need dealing with over the summer there isn't a single blemish in the varnish, scratch and sworl free !

It may be easy to chip the paint on these but it really does last well, mine looks showroom new (now!).

Look in Skoda Superb II, Hub Rust.

Ive done mine with Halfords high temp engine paint looks really good in mettaIic black

Did mine with silver hammerite. Only did one coat as I couldn't be bothered waiting that long. Looks way better. Just remember to give the brake discs (for it is they rusting not the hubs) a good scrubbing on the surface to be painted and don't get any on the face where the wheel sits, as that could help the wheel stick .

Looking B)

I painted mine black, after a good wire-brushing & cleanup with steel wool and white spirit.

Sweet! Did you paint the calipers as well, or is that just a clean up?

Thanks ! I just cleaned them up with shampoo, J-cloth and my wife's toothbrush, came up lovely really. The rear brake castings are much better quality finish so the paint really shines but even the front ones cleaned up really nice.

I had a look later in the day when the car was parked up and it looks a lot tidier with the painted hubs. I think black would do just as well but on balance I prefer the silver look.

I hope you put her toothbrush back where it belongs

I think the front calipers must get a lot hotter, hence they don't seem to clean up as well. Mine are a slight pinkish colour compared to the rears.

BTW I only painted my hubs black 'cos I have black wheels..... :D
