Handling issues

Featured Replies

In the last 6 months i have had a new driver side hub fitted under warranty to my Skoda Superb. After fitment of the hub, i now appear to have a Steering wheel that is out of alignment with the wheels. With my wheels straight ahead the steering wheel is sitting off to the right. I am now finding that i have lost some stability of the car in that small adjustments to the wheel on country lanes seems to make the car twitchy, this is something that was not apparent before the hub was fitted. Has anyone experienced anything similar to this or has got any suggestions as to what the problem may be.

I wondered if anyone knows if there is a steering wheel position sensor which could be applying the brakes due to the misalignment. I wondered if it thinks the car is going round a corner. The car has only done 16000 miles and is already flagging that the brake pads need attention.

Thanks

Take it back to the dealers and get them to correct the tracking - which is somehow not set right since the changed the hub, do it quickly otherwise they will say you have knocked the tracking out.

I think you'll find your tracking is out, take it somewhere they have a top spec alignment tool and know what they are doing, a lad with a Passat had the same issue a while back after getting his tracking done, if it's the same as the Passat it's not just a simple adjustment, it has a procedure and has to be done correctly, hth.

A wheel alignment would be mandatory after a job of this nature, was it done? If it was not done or done to the correct specs the tyres will develop uneven wear patterns and these patterns encourage instability and pulling of the steering one way or another. If a worn tyre is moved to a new wheel or tyres are rotated the instability could become worse. Get someone who knows what he is doing to have a look and possibly drive the car.

Thanks for advice. I'll speak to the dealer ASAP.

Find a place that has a Hunter wheel alignment tool and make the dealer pay for it to be set-up on the machine.

It's a real good piece of equiptment and far superior to the conventional set-ups most places carry.

PS. I don't work for them, but one of these was the only tool that was able to fix my last cars tracking issues.

+1 get it on a decent machine and it will be better than new , most dealers dont have the best kit for this

The tracking can be correct as that is detemined by the toein or out between the wheels, unfortunately if no attention is paid to the steering wheel position the tracking can be spot on but the steering wheel out of alignment. Its down to sloppy standards and poor qualitiy control when doing the job. the steering wheel out of alignment should have been easily picked up on the road test. Take it back and insist it gets a full laser alignment and the sterring wheel is put straight
